Back when I started, the notion that an iPad could largely replace a conventional computer was, um, a tad unusual. Some of the people who read my story, in fact, seemed to maintain that it was impossible, or at least that I was a moron for doing so. As one commenter put it: “This article is irresponsible. The iPad 2 is still an accessory to your REAL computer. To say that an iPad can replace your primary computing device is misleading and false.”
[snip]
That was then. This is now — and even though just a few months have passed, an awful lot has changed. I still run into doubting Thomases — one commenter recently informed me that my case for the iPad as a content-creation machine was “thinner than prison soup” — but I also have plenty of company. No matter what techies like Bimmer say, it's happening folks. It's a revolution against the people who think they know what we need vs. the people who do know what we need. Read Article Online Microsoft's new tablet doesn't stand a chance.

From you own article. What percentage of the time are you on the iPad? Hmm. About two-thirds of the time. Most of the rest of the time, I use either a MacBook Pro (owned by my employer, TIME) or my own 13″ MacBook Air. Or, sometimes, a Lenovo ThinkPad running Windows 7. Read more: http://techland.time.com/2012/09/04/one-.../#ixzz264mBs9fFWhat do you use a laptop for? Serious graphics projects, for which full-strength Photoshop is still the best tool. I do plenty of graphics on the iPad, too, usually in the tablet version of Photoshop and including some fairly ambitious jobs. But I can do more sophisticated, precise work on a Mac or PC, and I can do it faster. If a rabbit chases an iPad into a wood chipper, and there is no one there to see, does it make a mess?

I am not saying that it is a bad product, just that it is overpriced due to the fact that other products can do more for less money.

Every student in our disctrict's middle and high schools were given their own individual iPad to use during the school year. They carry those instead of textbooks. I had to pay $50 for insurance on my daughter's, but that's my only cost.

Can you imagine how much more they could have gone down it they did not pay millions (depending on class size)for the iPads and congrats on the lower property tax. We do not get an increase in tech. for students without an increase in tax, even if assessemts goes down.

An iPad with licensing rights to the text book material, could be as cost competitive as purchasing the textbooks themselves.

How much do all of those books that must be purchased, for each student year over year, cost. From a college text book standpoint. I could have purchased an ipad my first semester and still have been saved money for one semester as opposed to the actual books. Many books now have an "electronic" version which is significantly cheaper - although still fairly expensive.

...they drop thermoses from what I hear the first week of school, course who takes a lunch to school any longer? Taxpayers pay for breakfast, lunch and dinner for everyone!

Oh, yes. After a year of this, I have no desire to go back. I’m not trying to ditch conventional PCs; they’re better for some stuff. Ok, so the person who says it's his favorite is clearly saying that tablets CANT do it all....
