I do not like text abbreviations in work communications at all. I don't even like the breezy familiarity with which some of the younger generation phrase their business communications. I also do not agree with anything other than business dress for people who will be dealing with customers or business partners.
Call me a curmudgeon, but I believe in standards, and I believe they should be upheld. If you want to be treated as and perceived as a professional, then dress, talk, and act like a professional.
Careless or casual communication, coiffure, or clothing lend themselves to careless or casual cogitation. I think you are being very curmudgeonly. My motto is always, "Know your audience." My first bank job was in an area of town that included an eclectic mix of wealthy middle-aged/elderly folks, hipsters, and skaters with colored hair and nose rings. Several times I was asked why we wore ties. In some rural areas, people can be distrusting of men in suits. And I've never bought into the philosophy that business dress leads to more professional behavior and better production. If people require a suit and tie to behave professionally and work diligently, they have other issues. I approach communications the same way. I would never use such abbreviations in written communications with older business partners or customers. If I'm dealing with someone who is younger and/or tech-savvy, and I know them to communicate in such a fashion, I might be inclined. But in any case, if I'm in doubt, I do not whip it out!

OK, Jay - this one is too funny. My neice uses this on Twitter and on Facebook all the time (teenager) and I finally asked her what it meant. She looked at me like I was a creature from outer space when she told me!! How do they all know what they all mean?!? Is there a cliff notes version? Maybe there is an 'ap for that' so I can load it right to my phone and it will tell me? I know lots more than I did...but still...

Even worse, my employer has a acronym for everything and a dictionary to translate it. They can't do anything without making it into an acronym.

See, here is another problem. I try to translate some of these (such as LSHISMGO) and my brain goes a WHOLE different direction. I am thinking if I tried to figure it out on my own...that BOL would certainly censor some of my words :-)

[censored]... Shame on you! There are young, impressionable people in here! A quick google search revealed the source of LSHISMGO and it's meaning. It required a somewhat lengthy load time, but the squirrels eventually pulled up the BOL thread that contained it!

BQ, maybe in your next email to the staff, just type in random letters and see if they ask you for a text translation. YK,MUSC

Just got this in a response from one of our IT vendors: "Ya ill go ahead and ... " (I removed the rest). Not that it's an acronym or anything, but how about some basic grammar?? kthxbai!

It always makes me laugh - I just figure they just much younger than me, or maybe cooler? It works the other way too, though - I've been known to use capitalization and (gasp) punctuation in my texts...

My boys make fun of me because I spell everything out when I text them.
