Please, no political comments. I just think it is interesting to look into the business model of a children's program.

According to financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2011, Sesame Workshop and its nonprofit and for-profit subsidiaries had total operating revenue of more than $134 million. They receive about $8 million a year in direct government grants and more indirectly via PBS subsidies.

At the end of fiscal 2011, Sesame Workshop and its subsidiaries had total assets of $289 million. About $29 million was held in cash and "cash equivalents," mainly money-market mutual funds. Another $121 million on the balance sheet was held in "investments." According to the accompanying notes, these investments included stakes in hedge funds and private-equity funds.

I'm surprised the revenue is only $134 million. I think we had $134 million worth of Sesame Street toys, books and videos in the house when the kids were young. I wonder if some of the toy revenue goes somewhere else. Of course, I didn't bother to read the linked article, so..

well, remember that they are shown on PBS, which does not have normal channel advertising, so likely their revenue comes from licensing their products in toys/clothing/books/movies. If they moved to mainstream TV, their revenue would likely be much higher

oh, and i didn't read the article either...

True, their ad revenue is much lower than mainstream tv, but they don't have the same expenses that most tv programs do, like wardrobe for instance.

And I don't think they pay their talent very well - have you seen how Oscar lives? shocked

in case in wasn't completely obvious, I also did not read the article

Dora The Explorer seems to be more profitable, despite the added travel expenses.

I also didn't read the article, however just think of the expense purley from a cookie standpoint?! Have you seen how that cookie monster just jams them all over his face and they fall all over the place? Must take a lot of money to pay for all those cookies!!

It would seem that they are part of the 1%. Should we occupy Sesame Street?

So, an extra $8 million is going to balance the budget? Sweet!

I don't care if you talk about PBS and their balance sheet. I don't care if you talk about Cookie Monster and his love of cookies. I don't care if you want to talk about Jim Henson or Kermit or anything else to do with the Muppets. I don't care if you are a hater of PBS or Sesame Street and a fan or Dora (insert any other annoying kids show here) instead. We do not have a BOL rule covering the debate of Dora vs. Elmo.

What you cannot do is turn this political.

Political discussions are NOT allowed unless the topic has a direct relationship to banking. These discussions should be in the business threads. An example of an acceptable discussion is about a bill in Congress or funding for FEMA. An unacceptable post is a debate over the attributes or comparison of political beliefs. *

I've forwarded your question to The Count, but I fear it may take him a while to get to the answer.

Agreed! My husband believes the writes have to be on acid to come up with this stuff. But it sure does keep the kids attention.

At the risk of showing how long in the tooth I am, I'm reminded of a line in some of the old movies that used to be broadcast (in black and white, natch) on weekends, back when there were only five channels on television (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and an independent)...specifically, the character played by Mickey Rooney saying "Hey kids, let's put on a show!"

One would think the Grouch could afford better living arrangements than a garbage can if they have $29 million in cash.
