My husband and I are planning a trip to New England at the end of August to celebrate our 10th anniversary. As of right now (and nothing is booked yet) we plan on flying into Bangor, ME - going over to the coast and going on a whale watching tour. We then plan on driving to see whatever comes to mind and flying home out of Boston about 6-7 days after we get there. There are WAY too many things to see during this time, but does anyone have any suggestions? I'd love to see a moose while I'm there <grin>.

Warm? Do they hide in the heat (I don't know anything about moose)? Or do they go further north?

I was in Portland, Maine for 3 days a few years ago. The coolest thing we did was take the ferry over to Peak's Island (i think that's the name of it) and watch a Portland Sea Dogs minor league baseball game. Plus, Portland is just a really cool little city.

They stay indoors in the AC.

I saw a few in September a few years ago.

I vote for hiking, fishing and raft/canoe. It is not to hot for that.

Sounds heavenly. I'd like to get into New Hampshire and Vermont. Neither one of us have ever been to New England so it will all be new.

Ages ago, we drove through Maine from Quebec on our way to Boston. We stayed at Bar Harbor, and had an inexpensive and yummy lobster dinner. Bar Harbor is a very pretty town, though touristy. But then, we're tourists.

Bar Harbor is beautiful. And the lobster was cheap and plentiful! Right near there is Acadia National Park.

What about a cruise up into New England? Several cruise ships travel there. Imagine waking up in a new city every day with the ship as your hotel.

Try driving up Cape Cod and taking a ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.
I LOVE New England... ♥

Cali - my niece is named Jeri (that is her given name) and her husband is Ben. They've been there and had their picture done at the Ben & Jerry's sign - and then my brother photoshopped it to say Jeri's.

All of these are great ideas. Right now we're not planning on having the trip 'too' planned out. I'm a HUGE planner and sometimes that's not as much fun. Bar Harbor is where I've seen the whale watching tours part so that is probably where we will go our first night. We have talked about seeing a Red Sox game our last night there since they will be in town. Acadia National Park sounds wonderful, Vermont sounds amazing, etc., etc., etc.

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
Oh my goodness, Skittles. I spent a week in Vermont and New Hampshire in October. Gorgeous! Can't imagine doing all those states in 7 days....... I loved just driving around. At one point I was driving down a wooded country lane and as I rounded the curve, saw a county fair! It was wonderful and totally unexpected! Maine is my dream vacation that I haven't taken yet.

We went to Maine for summer vacation about 3 years ago. We stayed in Bar Harbor and spent quite a lot of time in Acadia National Park. I would go back in a heartbeat. Best vacation we have ever taken, hands down.

A word of caution on the whale watching tour, which we did. Being from Indiana, we do not have our "sea legs" and it was a very rough trip for us--only one of us actually got sick, but all of us were very, very queasy. We did see a few whales, but certainly not any whales leaping out of the water. More like, "Look quick, there is a fin." The whale watch is the one thing we would not do again if we ever get to go back to Bar Harbor.

I always, and plan on taking, Dramamine. I get motion sickness, but thanks for the warning. Seeing whales is on my husband's 'Bucket List'. Hopefully we'll have a better experience.

OK - should we get some good binoculars before we go? My husband would love some anyway - and this could be a good excuse.

Skip checking out Plymouth Rock on your way down to Boston. There is a rock, it appears to have been broken and sealed back together, but with soooo many rocks there, how can they be sure it was the rock?

I would love to go to Newport R.I. sometime... check out all of the 'cottages' of the turn of the century... maybe get some nice, tame and intimate decorating ideas.
