My daughter is going on a field trip with her English class to see Gatsby today. They are riding a school bus for the hour trip to the nearest theater playing the movie. I am sure she is thrilled. Three weeks left in her senior year and she has be on a bus for 2 hours and sit through this movie on a beautiful day. Definitely not her kind of film.

As far as Leo goes - I thought he was excellent in Aviator.

There is a much better version that the Redford film, but it has been tied up in litigation since the 50's I think...

The original Great Gatsby, which i had to watch in college for an English class, was horribly boring. Dunno if the new one is any better. I thought that movie was particularly well done, and well cast, too (except for Bruce Dern; Tom Buchanan should have been played by a much bigger, more athletic actor). It stayed very true to the novel. Based on what I have read about the Baz Luhrman version, I have absolutely no intention of seeing it. SF, did the version you're talking about have Robert Redford in it? He's the only guy that i can definitively remember was in it. Yes. It was released in, I believe, 1974. Starred Redford as Gatsby, Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan, Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway, Lois Chiles as Jordan Baker.

I always looked forward to watching the movies for the books we read in English class... and I was almost always disappointed. I agree but it is hard not to be let down. Reading a book is only limited by your own imagination to visualize the words into reality. In a movie they are limited by the film makers conflicting imaginations, budgets and technology.

Very true! I can think of one and only one time I enjoyed a movie more than the book.

Mind you, i was in college, so i might have a different view of it now, but the one thought i do remember having about the movie, and being annoyed about, was that it seemed like Redford (Gatsby) had 2 women interested in him: a hot brunette and a rather unattractive blonde (i guess that would be Farrow?); and he blew off the brunette and had eyes for the blonde. Yeah...i was pretty shallow then.

I Am Number 4. I liked the movie, cheesy as some parts were. The concept was interesting. So I read the book... I just couldn't grasp the way the author wrote the POV. It felt awkward and uneven.

Steven King's "TommyKnockers" was a much better TV series than book. I really hated that book.

The movie version of Dolores Claiborne was better than the book. As was The Hangover. The Hangover 2 was a better book than a movie, IMO.

I've yet to see a movie that was even close to as good as the book...way too many subtleties that a written word can convery that the spoken word can't...I always use the book/movie "Jaws" as an example...a portion of the book was told from the shark's point of view, and even that baby sharks developing in the womb point of view...no way a movie could convey that

Team America: World Police was not a very good book compared to the movie.

Saw Star Trek last Saturday at an IMAX on that ginormous screen and in 3d. Great movie, lots of action.
