Since there are no regulatory requirements for any type of certification, if going through the certification process is going to make you a better compliance officer, go for it.

You'll see a number of threads on the topic. When I started here as the Compliance Officer, I attended the certification course and got certified. It's a great introductory course and certificate and probably sufficient for a bank your size (and mine). I hope, though, at some point to sit for the CRCM.

Just to tag onto what Randy said, if I had already been in the business for any number of years, I don't know that the certification would've bought me anything. However, since I had no previous experience in compliance, it set a good foundation quickly.

I agree with Doug. I did the certification when I started in compliance. It is very good for a beginner and gives you a solid background. Our examiners have really never acknowledged if they like they certification or not but our President does.

Ok, I've signed up for the compliance institute and going to take the certification test. How is the test set-up? I know it's done at the end of sessions but are they open note or like the ACT-all in your head?

Here for the moment
They discuss different topics, generally you are given an idea of areas that will be tested, you study that night (in theory) and then test. Nothing is open book, but it is all multiple choice. Some of the tests were at the end of the day, but it seems like most of them were the following morning. It is a lot of information for a newbie (which I was/am when I did the course last fall) and also provides some great deskbooks to take back to the office and reference. I learned a lot there, but again- to echo what Doug said, maybe wouldn't have been as helpful had I been in the compliance function for a long time. Good luck!

When I took the tests, most were the next morning. Some of the easier ones were right after the session. The instructors are very good about pointing out during class what will be covered on the test. After you take the test you take it out and have it graded so you know right away how you did. This is how it was when I did it 4 years ago. From what I recall, the questions were pretty straigh forward and didn't try to trip you up.

If you're new to compliance and get "certified" after a seminar and test, I'd be suspect of the quality of the certification. On the other end of the spectrum is the CRCM, which is difficult to pass and certainly will prove you know your stuff!
