I have lots of family in Maine and we always did a summer camping trip to Maine. Moose spotting was and is one of our favorite excursions. The moose are everywhere in Maine and you may have one walk out on the road in front of you. Be cautious when driving.
The best place to spot Moose is in Baxter State Park at Sandy Stream Pond. Once you take the long ride into the park, it's about a tenth of a mile walk through the woods to the small pond. The moose are very used to seeing people and appear to be tame, but use caution, they are wild animals. For the most part they are only interested in eating the water plants in the pond and will appear to ignore you. Many times I've had them standing looking at me only 10 feet away. There are some terrific large rocks to climb out on to get some great photos with Mt Katadhin in the background.
If you go to Bar Harbor which is on Mt Desert Island, you may also see moose. Take a trip into Acadia National Park. It's a beautiful park and the view from the top of Mt Cadillac is breathtaking. The town of Ellsworth is on the way to Bar Harbor and they occasionally have moose walk right down through the center of town and in the shopping centers.
Have a great trip!

Have never been to the New England States, so not as familiar with your climate. Just know I want to avoid the snow. Would the middle of September to the middle of October be a good time to plan a trip to that region to include seeing fall foliage, Acadia National Park, etc., or is September a litte early for the fall foliage?

I salute you people that can live somewhere in which winter starts in October and lasts into April. You are hardy souls indeed!

My father grew up in Northern Maine on a potato farm. Mom grew up in South Philly, so I did my growing up in PA. When they retired, they moved to Northern Maine and built a log home on a lake; very remote, about 20 miles north of Caribou, Maine. They live there year round. Shoveling the snow off of the roof is the winter pasttime. And you must have a snow plow - dad has his mounted on his ATV with a cab cover.
Yes, the autumn season is in September and snows starts falling in October.
We are all shocked they still stay there year-round and do not go south with all the other "snow birds".

I made plane reservations yesterday. We fly into Bangor on August 24th and fly home from Boston on the 31st. I've booked two nights in Bar Harbor for the 24th & 25th and our whale watching tour is the 25th at 8:30 a.m. I've also reserved a car. We still haven't decided where we are going to go from Bar Harbor - probably either New Hampshire (White Mountains) or Vermont (Green Mountains). We want to see some wildlife. We'll spend the last 2-3 days in Boston and hope to see the Red Sox.

if you decide to go to Vermont, you can see the cabot creamery, ben and jerry's, the von trap lodge, and a maple farm all within striking distance of each other.
if you go to new Hampshire, I recommend staying in north Conway. you'll have access to both the kancamagus highway and the route that takes you to Franconia notch and the flume gorge. plus it's a fun little town to explore. I would also recommend eating at may Kelley's, a genuine irish restaurant.

My husband wants to go to New Hampshire and/or Vermont in between Maine and Boston - so now we will be looking to find places to see. Bailey has given us some good ideas, though.

In Southwestern Vermont (around Manchester) is the Equinox Resort. They have the British School of Falconry associated with the resort. If you've ever wanted to don the leather glove and have a hawk land on your arm- it is an incredible experience. The people who run the "school" are passionate about what they do and very willing to share a lot of information. I've done it twice and would like to go back again!

I want to see a moose. How's that - although the falconry thing sounds really cool. I'll have to let my husband know about that.
Sox - we are thinking of going to the Red Sox game on August 30th. We need to hurry up and decide so I can get tickets.

I think my husband was to see the park more than the game, but he's a big baseball fan. Loves to listen to games on XM radio - pretty much any game.

We thought the same last spring when thinking back to their 7-23 record in September of 2011...

If you go to Vermont, and hang out in Manchester (outlets, falconry, a snazy inn, food pits and great bookstore, also take a short road trip to the Vermont Country Store. Heaven on earth for nostalgia buffs. Penny candy galore. Good place to eat right next door.
New England can be naughty regarding peak foliage colors. You will be safer mid-September to mid-October. However, if the summer is particularly nasty, the colors may not ever get to their full potential.
Crafty types (sewing) go to Country Treasures in Chester, VT. Cute village with a nice mix of stores/food pits, stuff, including antiques. If you are a wool lover/crafter/ drive from this location to the Dorr Mill store in NH. Wool for crafts plus great selection of Pendleton blankets, etc.
