We are finding more and more duplicate checks for small dollar amounts hitting our customers accounts. We have recently started reviewing a duplicate check report in order to catch these items before the customer does.

If a check has cleared twice, we have until the mid night deadline to return the item as a duplicate item, correct?

Has anyone else seen this problem grow or know what could be causing this to occur?

Correct

Some of this is people using RDC and then depositing the check also or running RDC files twice.

Thank you! That is what we were thinking as well.

If the check has cleared twice and is truly a duplicate, why would you not do a Fed Adjustment with the PAID item type? They no longer have a minimum dollar amount requirement.

I feel the fed adjustment is the more desirable route to go. Sometimes the other bank or the fed caused the duplication and if it was the fed, the payees account could be debited for the item as a return if the depositing bank is not aware of the problem.
