California: #18 (tied with North Dakota). If you put the two together, they sort of balance each other out.

are New Yorkers REALLY happier than people from Indiana?). Perhaps. If so it is because they don't know how bad it is to live in NY, or what they could have if they lived elsewhere. This poll is interesting. I am surprised by some of the results. However I think the poll should just ask people how happy they are to live where they are. This is a serious over analysis to answer a simple question. I could not imagine that people would be equally as happy to live in NY as they would in Florida. I have lived in Florida. It is great in so many ways. I have been to NY, I would never, ever want to live there.

we drink to forget our misery................and after having to drive with Illinois people making their way to and from their WI getaways As someone that worked in the Lake Geneva area, this is so true! Had a manager get spit on when I was moonlighting at Shopko. Guy from IL claimed he was our best customer, after spending less than $50 on his purchase, and said we didn't provide him with the customer service he deserved. So, we did. . . . and called the police to come deal with him.

That fella ought to be more careful with that. Some folks don't react well to being spit on. I know of at least one guy that lost his teeth and got a bunch sutures for doing that to someone. Beyond the current health dangers, its just rude.

FYI the rules are slightly different in the 'burbs. For example, after 8:00PM, you go 5-10 MPH under the speed limit. Yes, because it's nighttime. And be careful on Sundays, that's when all the elderly folks head out for services and brunch. You can expect to go 25 MPH on every road then. Minivans are tricky. If it's a suburban mom, she'll want to go 20 over the limit because she's running late. If it's a service van, s/he will want to go 10 under because they aren't in any sort of rush to get to their next customer. I had no problem driving through it, driving at excessive speeds, or making un-signaled lane changes while talking on my phone and shaving. Being concerned about random wildlife getting in my way while driving through the burbs was a bit unexpected though

For driving, thin crust artisan pizza is much safer. Even NY style has the whole, "hot stringy napalm cheese" thing going.

Tennessee is 47? Heard this morning that we're ranked near the top for prescription drug abuse. WIth so many peeps drugged up, nobody knows their unhappy, so we should have ranked much higher on the happiness scale!

Many people cannot imagine giving up New York City...the arts (dance, orchestra, opera, live music venues, art museums, etc.), the restaurants, the shopping, and on and on.

Most people outside of NY do not realize this but they can experience these things pretty much everywhere else in America, and under better conditions. Which is likely why NY is listed as the 3rd worst city in the US.

I am outside of NY and I still find it much more exciting to be in NY than most other cities. I enjoy large cities. Not everyone does. My aunt is the same way. I live in a decent sized city. She loves coming to this city (not even close to the size of NY City). But I prefer it at her house out in the country.

Nothing wrong with that. I just think NY is overrated. Easy example NY pizza. People from NY swear that NY style pizza is the best. It is the worst. Trust me. The best pizza i've ever eaten was in NYC (and there are many different styles you can get there, from traditional to brick oven to who knows what). 2nd best is in the little town i live in. 3rd is Chicago, 4th is Dallas...drops off greatly after the 4th...but, i prefer the thin crust over the deep dish.
