We have a customer whose account was opened back in the 1980s. We have a copy of the Business' Articles of Incorporation. My only question is, on the new CTRs you can list "Articles of Incorporation" as the form of ID for a business, but where do you get a number?

Thanks!

So, what do we do in this situation? Leave the "number" field blank, or check the box for "unknown"?

A CU, Where Regs Don't Apply
Checking "unknown" on #20 greys out the whole section. In these cases, I have been checking "Other", typing in the source of documentation that we used to open the account, then leaving the number blank.

I was told by Fincen to put my cursor in the the number field and hit the space bar to "space fill" it when you don't have a number.

Compliance Lover, were those instructions for how to deal with this scenario when preparing a batch file for submission, or for actually filling out a .pdf for discrete submission?

"Space fill" only applies in batch filing...

Many (most?) states have a web site listing businesses registered with the state. In Michigan that site includes copies of their articles and the unique ID number assigned by the state.

This thread has come full circle.

There are many things that might be used to identify a business from a partnership agreement, articles of organization, articles of incorporation, certificate of good standing, Secretary of State registration, state comptroller's registration, etc. The variety among states is nearly infinite.

If the specific document you use carries a number assigned by the state that could be used to research or verify the document, then put it on the form. If not, leave it blank.

P.S. The report already elicits the EIN.
