We are having a "management team building" exercise this week - which I was originally looking forward to - until - I found out that it will involve physical activities that I am unable to do due to ongoing disability. (I fractured my knee cap and am still working with a PT to resolve issues) The exercise involves zip lines and whitewater rafting both of which are off limits per my PT. I am unable to walk any significant distance without my leg going numb. Sr. management has been made aware that I will not be able to participate - The biggest issue for me is privacy. I am not eager to be put in a group of my peers and have to explain why I am not able to participate. I am very self-conscious about it. I am fairly new to the company and do not know many of the other managers well. Any suggestions on how best to handle questions when asked? Thank!!

I truly would just say I fractured my knee cap and am still undergoing PT. I can't believe anyone would question that!

I agree with Kathleen B. They may ask how you fractured it and you can just say you fell if you don't feel comfortable with discussing the real reason. Most folks won't inquire any further.

So you fractured your kneecap when you were in a downhill skiing race with Lindsey Vaughn and you both collided. You both had surgery at the same time, but she recuperated sooner.

Get a Sharpie, have someone sign her name to your kneecap (just above the scar that RRJ mentioned) and get sympathy.

If not, just say it was fractured. People get in accidents all the time, and bet you'll not be the only one sitting this one out.

They'd put me on to test the strength of the zip line.

Pulling people out of the ditc...
Tell them you fractured it, if they ask how, say it was on a zip line after white water rafting...

whitewater rafting. How cool is that? smile

I have done it more than a few times for those who do not have a broken leg (yet): Most trips are not like what you see on tv frown I am sure that a teambuilding exercise would be on one of the calmer rivers. frown

You have to pay extra for the realy big rivers. cool

At age 32 I broke my leg very badly (pins, surgery, etc.) at a roller skating party for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. In the months following I told everyone who asked that it was on the Black Slope at Aspen.

If someone asks you a question that really isn't any of their concern you are not honor bound to tell them the truth. wink The "zip line after whitewater rafting" thing is artful. It should get a laugh and clearly indicate your perspective.

Now, about the actual effect on teamwork generated by "team building" exercises where people feel pressure to participate...

You could always say, "I want to participate but my PT won't let me. She/He is concerned about my knees."

Then change the subject so they can't pester you for more info.
