We completed a cash advance transaction for a customer that is in excess of $10,000.01. We are not sure which box to check in Part II, Boxes 30-34 for type of transaction.

Can anyone give me some assistance on this?

Thank you!

Busy Bee, I probably would use block 36 (other) and specify that the transaction was a credit card cash advance. I like to think that 3 years later I can use the CTR to easily locate the transaction.

Thank you, nemsi! We thought that might be the answer, but needed confirmation.

Old thread, but new "form".....

Had a customer come in to the bank took 10000.00 out of his account and 9000.00 cash advance from a credit card. Took the cash and left the bank. The credit card was not our card. Do I mark advance on credit or other?

Sorry, it's Friday before vacation and my brain is just not working today.

Here are my thoughts..

I believe you'd enter the entire amount $19,000 in box 22. On page 58, the CTR instructions say to "Record the account numbers of all accounts involved in the transaction(s)", so I'd enter the account number for the withdrawal, and then click the little plus sign to enter the credit card account number.

Then, enter $10,000 in line 27a (withdrawal) and $9,000 in 27b (advance on credit).

Any other opinions?

You would enter the credit card number even though it was not an account held by your bank? I thought we only entered accounts held at our bank? I was planning on entering the GL account that the cash advances run through for the account number on that transaction.

Ok, just to update, I called the help desk. Per FinCEN, the cash advance is still an advance on credit (27b) and the rep stated that the bank is not responsible for listing account numbers not held at the institution. She also stated not to list the GL acct number....they do not want GL numbers even if that is how the bank will generate a tracer document.

I didn't particularly like the idea of listing a non-bank account number, but since the instructions didn't specify.... I'm glad you got the response you did from the Help Desk.

Thanks Dani. I'm a little distracted by their lack of interest in GL numbers...

On reflection, I would list the GL number on the CTR. Regardless of their lack of interest, it would help in using the CTR as a tracer document. An example would be when a bank had cashed its own cashiers check. If it carried a GL number rather than a conventional account number leaving the GL off the CTR would create the impression that a foreign check had been cashed.
