No...my point is many people like living there, working there, and/or visiting there.

Loved working there, and living in Jersey City for commuting convenience. Daughter has lived/worked in Manhattan for a number of years and lived in Brooklyn Heights for a couple of years now. Loves it.

It all depends on what we want.

People have different tastes and different interests. I love being near the beach in Alabama, but I still go to Philadelphia and NYC for a break and some real life.

I love New York. We spend quite a bit of time there, for the shows, and the museums, and the food... We're members of the Bronx Zoo (which gets us into the NY Aquarium and the Central park Zoo, as well,) and we've spent plenty of evenings just walking around the Village (East AND West.) I can understand hating the commute, traffic is brutal, but the bus (that stops at the end of my street) takes me close to Times Square so we can do all the tourist-y or Broadway things. Just last month we went in to take my Daughter to the Harry Potter exhibit (to celebrate her finishing the series.) The worst part is always coming home!

I love NYC - would live there in a heartbeat - and as soon as I win the lottery I will be moving. Looking for me on Selling New York when that happens!

State of Confusion
Was there Memorial Day weekend in 2011, we only had 3 days but saw a ton of places. I agree Pale the streets were full of garbage and don't forget the potholes that are the size of buses.

But meet some nice people at the 'tourist' spots and friendly people on the subway. Probably the weirdest thing was the lady who breastfeed her 3 year old during our Grenwich village walking tour...

I would visit again but not my cup of tea for living.

We were expecting rude people based on the stereotype of NYC, but found just the opposite. It seems you cannot stop for 5 seconds with a map in your hand without someone trying to help you. People offered help in bagel shops, in the subway, everywhere. We were talking to a guy behind us at Citi Field, and he asked us if people were nice. He said it's because NYC got nicer after 9/11 - the personality of the city changed. Interesting, but I take it with a grain of salt, because he was pretty much full of carp on everything else.

I used to visit Manhattan for work several times a year and always loved it. I always tell people to walk around and explore. You find so much when you are at street level and at a slower pace than a cab or subway (although the subway is great if you have a destination a distance away).

The only place I ever direct people to is the chicken and rice cart at 53rd and 6th (Avenue of the Americas). The first time I visited over ten years ago I stayed at the Hilton on Avenue of the Americas and was stumbling back to my room at much too late of an hour when I spotted a line going down the sidewalk. I was curious so I stood in line and got myself a plate of the chicken and rice with white sauce. Not only was it delicious it saved my life, or at least helped ease the hangover the next morning.

Does that lady still run out in the middle of the street and throw her tam in the air and spin around once a week? No?
