Jimmy Buffet - writer of Margaritaville, potentially the most lucrative song ever - it has spawned resorts, restaurants, drink mixes, blenders, etc. The man has made millions on that song and hasn't had a hit in 30 years.

Buffett's album, License to Chill, released on July 13, 2004, sold 238,600 copies in its first week of release according to Nielsen SoundScan. With this, Buffett topped the U.S. pop albums chart for the first time in his three-decade career.

sorry its wiki and only 9 years

One can at least still argue that Buffet has never had a good song. People might have been foolish enough to purchase the song, but it's still bad.

Nice to know that at least 5 billion people had enough sense to not buy it.

Never understood how Margaritaville was his most popular song. He has at least 8 songs better than that.

That would be....."Ladies and Gentlemen....EARTH! WIIIIIND!...AND FIAAAAAAAHH!" That's how they were introduced at each concert. Very good band and they had fun.

But the most underrated was Alan Parson's Project. But they never came out from behind the curtain. So nobody knew who they were. Unbelievably well written and performed. I could listen to their french horns all day.

Now this is stuck in my head:

Dr. Evil: The key to this project is the giant laser, which was invented by the noted Cambridge physicist, Dr. Parsons. So therefore, it is fitting to call it: "The Alan Parson's Project".

laugh Why don't you just call it "Operation Wang Chung?" smile

But back to the topic, Tower of Power is a great and under-rated band.

Mike Oldfield (of Exorcist fame) and Thomas Dolby (She Blinded me with Science) - both play ever single instrument on albums, which is why it takes them several years to do each one...both are musical geniuses...

That's pretty cool! I can respect that.

Although at first I thought you wrote Paul Oakenfold, and that just made me laugh thinking you were listening to trance music. laugh

I think I still have a vinyl copy of Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". I think side one was just one long song, about 23-25 minutes, where he just kept adding different instruments on top of his tracks. I didn't know that Thomas Dolby did the same thing, but I swear that "She blinded me with Science" was our H.S. band directors favorite song, it got played about 3 years in a row.

Tubular Bells had 2 songs on the album, one on each side...the B side did introduce a number of instruments, stating each one before adding it...

I actually have a good bit of Oakenfeld, Orbital, Moby, and Electronic on the ipod...listen to that when at the gym and doing eliptical...great way to kill time, and a great rythym to work out to

I know we all have our favorite singers/bands/genres, but I really like trying out new stuff. Keeps things fresh.

My roommate in college had the album, and I put in on and laid down to take a nap. I was drifting off to sleep when he said "Glockenspiel" and I about wet the bed. I wasn't expecting to hear a voice in the room.
