Happy, I've had 13 dislocated shoulders, broken the head of the humorus once and had a total reconstruction. Depending on what broke and how they fixed it you could be looking at anywhere from 3 months to a year for it to feel something like "normal".
The bones heal fairly fast (6 weeks), the soft tissue takes much longer. How is your range of motion so far?

By broken shoulder do you mean shoulder blade or clavicle. I would imagine the blade takes a very long time to heal, but I have never heard of anyone breaking this. But I have had many friends break their clavicle and it heals very, very quickly.

I am guessing, as a larger bone, it will take longer to heal but will heal better than a clavicle. But I am no doctor. My brother broke his femur wrestling and was still able to wrestle just fine afterwards.

As the doctor will allow you, get the range of motion back. Range of motion is the key to a good recovery. If you broke the neck of the bone and they used rods, plates, screws to repair the bone it will take a bit longer as the surgery can cause a fair amount of trauma. But if the damage was not within the joint capsul itself, that will be in your favor as there will be less scar tissue in the way of your range of motion. If your docotr is ok with it, I would get a ball of some sort (racquetballs work well) and I would keep it with you and squeeze it a lot. it will help to keep the atrophy down a little.

My husband has major shoulder surgery just over a year ago. Almost from day one he tried to move the shoulder outside of the sling to help with the range of motion. Did wonders for him - but check with your doctor first. They also gave him a squeeze ball to use when we left the hospital as Bbb1 suggested.

ETA - my husband is a commercial lender so he doesn't like following the rules.

I broke mu kneecap a year ago and it is finally almost back to normal. I know it isn't the same but be sure to keep working on that range of motion as the doctor allows and go to physical therapy when allowed. My bone was healed in a few months but it was the movement and strength that I had to get back.

It is a small tear in the labrum (cartillage around the shoulder bone and socket) that generally worsens over time...

I am still a little confused by the all caps thing... wouldn't one key stroke of the caps lock key take care of this issue?

the "caps lock" is on the left side of the keyboard

if it's your left shoulder that is broken and in a sling...can't reach the left side of your keyboard

duh smirk

Well, the exclamation point is on the left hand side as well and I see it being used frequently, and it requires the use of a second key simultaneously as well .

I'm not sayin, but I'm just sayin'.

i'd prefer it like this, with all lower. even if the capitalization rules aren't followed. IT'S HARD TO READ THIS ESPECIALLY WHEN THE POST IS LONG.

You have to keep in mind that some of us never took a typing class, cant type without watching our fingers and make so many typos its not even wprth correcting them all...like me! laugh
So anything that makes it harder (or painful) aint gonna happen. When I had my sling, it took a proclamation from The Almighty for me to even think of typing. laugh

Did I mention you should get a ball..? smile
