Interesting topic on the local radio station this morning. Is it better to have a job you love, and make less? Or a job you hate and make great money? My thought is that being broke causes a lot more stress in life than whatever time I would spend at said job. But that is just me. However, I don't really know what either of those are like because I love my job and am also broke!

Money helps... thats for sure. But it can hurt too.
Since we spend a good majority of our lives at work, I suppose it is important to really like your job?

Love your job. Going to a job you hate is MISERABLE. I'd rather make less and be happy at work.

I've tried jobs I love that pay terribly, and jobs that I hate that pay terribly. When/if I ever try a job I hate that pays very well, I would be happy to report back!
But a job you love that pays really well never seems to make it onto the list of options? Why is that?

I once worked at a bank where I dreaded going to work every day. That bank is known to pay out the nose so you can't leave even if you want to. It was so bad that many days I cried on my commute into work. I was making the most money in my career to that point, but it was so not worth being put on anti-depressants just to go to work. Luckily for me, I have found my current job where I love what I do, who I work with, and make more money than even at [censored]-bank...and I don't have to take drugs to like it.

Not only do I love my job, I was given a nice raise earlier in the year which makes coming to work all that much better.

When I was in a miserable work environment, I learned everything I could and then took that knowledge to another bank and made more money at the same time. Don't know that I've ever taken a cut in pay to change jobs. I know what my budget needs are, the minimum I can accept and still pay the bills. Can't imagine taking a job where those needs weren't met no matter how unhappy I was in my current situation. I would be looking and just keep looking until I found what I needed. The knowledge that I was looking for a way out of a difficult work environment is often enough to keep me "satisfied" while working there.
The reason I work is because I need money. Personal fulfillment is secondary.

As a mortgage industry refugee I've taken several cuts in pay...today I make roughly 2/3 what I was making in 2001 during the high times. But I'm much happier working for a community bank with heart than I was working for the huge, poorly run corporation that eventually imploded. And since I spent about 4 years with little to no income at all, I learned to simplify tremendously. I live better now, on much less, than I did a decade ago. Sure it would be nice to have more money, but at least I no longer have to be responsible for contributing to the collapse of the economy. Peace of mind is indeed invaluable.

I chose to be happy in what I do. Some people chose be miserable wretches no matter where they are. It would be nice to make more money and I suppose I could if it were more important to me. I think most of us fall in here somewhere. To do something that you really, really want to do as a career is a great risk. Because you are taking something that you believe that you hold dear and putting it out there, what if you fail at it? What if its nowhere near as much fun as you'd hoped? What if no one else likes what you do? It takes a brave person to do such a thing. But I think the rewards are much higher for such a person. Now, anybody want to start a running, bicycling and golf shop that sells pizza and beer!

My 2nd boss in banking was a miserable human being. I worked full time and attended college at night. She made fun of me every day for trying to better my self. The atmosphere in that department was terrible - everyone turned on each other instead of sticking together because they wanted our leader to find fault with the other person and take the heat off of themselves. She could be cruel. But I learned a lot from her - she had a great deal of knowledge concerning loan operations. I learned everything I could and when I found that perfect job - jumped on it! I also learned how NOT to supervise folks. which was a good thing, since my next job was supervisory - in charge of another bank's loan operations area. last I heard, that poor soul was in a mental health care facility full time.

As a mentor once told me, sometimes a job is just a way to fund the things you really want to do when you're off the clock.

As a mentor once told me, sometimes a job is just a way to fund the things you really want to do when you're off the clock. That's my philosophy. It's called "work" for a reason - nobody expects it to be fun. My job is not my life. It is simply what I do to afford my life.

Maybe a little off topic, but I think my generation has done a diservice to the young people of today, telling them they need to find a job they love, or find their passion and make money doing that.
So now we have a bunch of young people with mixed up priorities. They won't work at jobs they dislike or have no passion for because they have been told to do something they love.
What a bunch of phooey!

I agree Pale, your generation ruined things for us!
Find a job you can make a living on, then when you're independently wealthy, then you can do something fun! Like be a docent at the local museum, yelling at kids not to climb on the dinosaur skeletons. I can make any situation fun or amusing, at least in my own mind.
