About 3 weeks ago, my little shih tzu "Buster" started hurting in his lower back and hips.(He is 4 1/2 years old) It got to the point after different treatments that he could barely stand on his back legs. We couldn't hardly touch him without him crying with pain. After 3 weeks of vet visits, we ended up taking him to a specialist in Austin. Long story short, he had 2 ruptured disc, and they did surgery on Wednesday. Today because of the swelling, his back legs are paralyzed. They say he should get 95% of his mobility back in his back legs as time should heal them. I just ask for prayers for my little furry puppy and complete restoration. Has anyone else had this happen to their pups? It sure hurts the heart when you know they are hurting and you can't do anything for them. Thank goodness we are on the road to recovery. He is still in the doggine hospital and we are supposed to pick him up Saturday. Prayers please!

Poor little guy - and poor you, too. Prayers for Buster's quick recovery. Having sick/injuried babies is awful.

I had that happen to one of my dogs years ago due to being runover by a four wheeler. Unfortunatly, it involved more than the discs (which would have healed well, according to the vet) but he was further complicated by a bad break in his leg...They put a really long pin in it...unfortunately, even tho the vet keep him for a month or so...the steroids which would have 'fixed' his back worked against the leg healing and it did not end well...I miss that little dog, Spike. frown

The vet went the extra mile in his case, however...I'll never forget that. smile

My heeler has fused discs in her back. She has the 9 lives of a cat...I won't even go into all of her 'adventures'. I've had her acupunctured, chiro adjusted, massage therapisted laugh and on pain meds. Other than a gimp from a broken leg as a pup...and a stiff back...she's 9 and is still a tazmanian devil dog at times. smile

I'm betting your little fellow will be just fine!

How many started with him saying (in dog language) "Watch this".

Dlynn... so sorry to hear about your little guy. A very good friend of mine went through something similar with her dog last summer. After a very expensive vet bill (2 surgeries), he is doing great but they advise he not jump onto or off of things. So, they try to keep him off the couch... and built a ramp for him to get on and off the bed.

Thanks for all the well wishes! The vet called me this morning and said that Buster is able to stand on his back legs and is even a little bit mobile. For the most part we are in for weeks recovery. They said he is eating very little, but they think he may be a little depressed, but we will be able to pick him up tomorrow morning. I cant wait to get my baby back home. Thanks again for all the encourgement.

My dad has done this surgery on a number of dogs and has had very good success with it. So here is a prayer that Buster does very well with his.

So sorry Dlynn. We had something similar, no surgurey, but we had to limit our pup's movement for 2-3 months. Yours will be ok. It'll take a while, but he'll get there. Slow and easy.

Don't let him rush his recovery. That's the danger in pain meds. They get to feeling good and try do more than they should and re-injure themselves. Happy thoughts going out to yall. smile

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
My Aunt's little shih tzu was kicked down the stairs when burglers broke into their home. Hurt her back. She's just fine now, but refuses to climb up or down the stairs. Hope your little Buster will be okay.

Oh Walden... that is horrible! I don't like to wish ill will on others, but a little karma would be good for those burglars!

To give you all something to smile about . . .

I went to my vet's office a little bit ago to pick up some prescriptions. A woman walked in with a 10 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. She was precious!

If only our kids stayed little forever... and our dogs stayed puppies too!

Ok, not really - but if you could flip that switch just once in a while for a little bit.....

We went and got Buster out of the hospital Sauturday. He was glad to see us as much as we were to see him. I am having a hard time getting him to eat. Any suggestions on what might entice him. I mananaged to get him to eat some boiled chicken brest, but that is all. I can't get him to eat any of his regular dog food, wet or dry. He has lost nearly 3 pounds and seems pretty weak. Thanks

He may need a white diet for a while. (chicken brest, rice, broth, pedialyte).

I had to give our pup pedialyte and or broth with an oral syringe a couple of times when he was sick.

update: It's been a week now since his surgery. This morning he got up and wobbled on his little weak back legs, but stood on his own to pee. Yay! Now if we could just get him to poop..Dr says that is normal for this type of surgery and recovery. Again, thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.
