I was thinning out my book shelf over the weekend, and I came across a book that really gave me the creeps years ago. And the story is true.

Since many of you are younger, you may not have read this book. If you have read it, you know what I mean about "creepy".

The book is "Small Sacrifices" by Ann Rule. It is such a good read. I started to re-read it last night and I hated to put it down. It is dark because it really happened...

"Small Sacrifices" was about the Diane Downs case, wasn't it? Mother who shot her three children, then shot herself in the arm and claimed it was the result of a car-[censored].

Ann Rule has done a great job with "true crime" stories over the years.

Yes. She also wrote "Poisonwood Bible". Her writing is just so beautiful, and she takes on really interesting issues. Flight Pattern is sort of a "what if" scenario around global warming. She researched it pretty thoroughly to make sure her scenario was truly viable from a scientific point of view. Apparently her husband is an environmental studies professor.

Poisonwood Bible was excellent.

However, the Lacuna was incredibly difficult to get into and in fact, I couldn't even finish it. It just did not engage my attention (and my mother said the same thing.)

Sometimes I like to go back and re-read older books that I haven't read in over a decade. I love most of Barbara Michaels books but most were written in the 80's or earlier. I get a kick out of the technology she mentions and how dated it is (nobody on cell phones, no internet). Currently re-reading Into the Darkness.

All the new fall releases are starting to come out and land on my doorstep. I need an uninterrupted week to sit and read! (Yeah like that's going to happen.)

And Jim Butcher needs to quit going to Cons so he can stay home and write the next book.

I'm not reading any book at this time. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not even an audio book for the vehicle. I think this might be the first time since I was in the grade school. It feels strange but I don't have any inclination to pick one up right now. I even have 4-5 brand new best sellers downloaded to Ipad's Kindle Ap, but still haven't started one. I'd better make a Drs. appointment!

I do that a couple of times a year Okie. I just take a break for a week or two. Normally I read every day.

Glad to hear that Sarah. I spent good money stocking up my TBR stack before we left for vacation but I didn't read anymore after I finished the newest JD Robb.

Where'd you find that, EGB? I can't find anything about it on either his website or on Amazon.

Never mind - I found it. It's a new comic book, not a book, book. smile

Boo on it being a comic book, I couldn't tell that from the Amazon pre-release notice. However, I did wonder about the title being "HC".

The title is what made me wonder, too. It doesn't fit his usual naming convention even without the HC.

And we already know that the next book is titled "Skin Game".

I'm reading "Sh*t My Dad Says" and it's pretty good. Very foul, perhaps the most profanity-laden book I've ever read.

that book is great. Have you gotten to the part about his first night in LA yet? That will have you busting a gut you will laugh so hard.

His second book was not even close to that funny (think it was "i stink at girls" or "why i stink at girls").

Haven't gotten to that part yet, Hap. I'm sure my fellow passengers on the train will think I've gone wonky.

Working my way through Rachel Aaron's "Eli Monpress" series (fantasy.) I like them very much.

I tried reading "Deadly Little Secrets" by Kathryn Casey; I HATED it. Stopped reading after about 25% of the way through.

Just finished The Orphan Train by Kline. The context:

Between 1854 and 1929, more than 100,000 children were sent, via orphan trains, to new homes in rural America. Recognizing the need for labor in the expanding farm country, Brace believed that farmers would welcome homeless children, take them into their homes and treat them as their own.

I enjoy historical fiction, particularly when the setting is painstakingly accurate. This book, probably intended for teen readers, describes a chapter in American history that few people know about.

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
Just finished "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris" by David McCullough. Really interesting - how Americans traveled to Paris for an education in the early years because there were no excellent schools in the USA at that time. Took it from around 1836 to after WWI.

Currently reading Clive Cussler's "The Mayan Secrets".
