We will be spending one day in San Antonio later this month on a family trip. It will be the first time everyone but my husband has been there. We know we want to see the River Walk, but what else should we be sure to see? Thanks for your suggestions!

The Alamo, it's just off the river walk.

OK
The zoo is supposed to be really good, if you're into zoos.

Used to go to zoos all the time when traveling, but my son is almost 15 now so our zoo attendance is not what it used to be!

if you are only going to have 1 day, i would focus on the riverwalk areas, including the Alamo, and the sidestreets around the riverwalk. lots of great restaurants, shopping, and musuems in that area.

unless you happen to be there during the week they drain the river to clean it...then it is really nasty and stinky

La Villita is a really interesting art district right off the Riverwalk. There are arts galleries to walk through and a bunch of stores selling souvenirs, gifts, and other stuff. You can also find custom jewelry, pottery, and imported Mexican folk art from some of the street vendors. Its an interesting place for sure.

If you go to the Riverwalk, don't eat there. Food is not that great and is overpriced. One of our favorite restaurants is Mi Tierra in Market Square - it is open 24 hrs & you can buy yummy pastries when you leave so you can have breakfast the next day! Pico de Gallo is fairly close to Mi Tierra and is great as well. It is a hole in the wall, but the food is authentic.

The Alamo, of course. Tower of the Americas has a restaurant and observation deck if that's something you want to do.

Where else are you planning to go? An amazing little stop about 45 minutes north of San Antonio would be Gruene. The Gristmill restaurant is a must if you go! Make sure to sit outside overlooking the river if you can. There are some neat shops there and Gruene Hall (the oldest dance hall in Texas) is usually open for drinks and there is live music every evening. Your son would be able to go in with you as long as there isn't a show with a cover charge.

Thanks for the food recommendations. I will definitely take note of those!

We are spending a few days in Corpus Christi, then driving to Fredericksburg to spend a few days with family there. I have heard of Gruene and Gruene Hall, but not sure if time will allow a visit there or not.

I LOVE Fredericksburg! It is one of my favorite towns in Texas. The Hill Country is just beautiful! Lots of wineries and great German food! We love good food, in case you haven't noticed wink Now I'm really wishing I was eating lunch at Hondo's on Main with a pitcher of sangria in front of me!

Have them take you to Luckenbach. It's not much, but it is pretty much tradition that if you go to Fredericksburg you have to go to Luckenbach too.

Hope you have a great trip & let me know if you need any other suggestions!

Corpus is a fun place, the Aquarium is pretty cool and the USS Lexington is awesome, depending on how interested your son is in to WWII history and ship museums.

Pale is near San Antonio, instead of renting a car, you should save some money and ask to borrow his...rumor has it he will lend to you for a song and dance and tank top...not neccessarily in that order

we went one year in June, i think on our trip to Sea World we saw teh Penguin exhibit about 90% of the time (anyone who has spent summers in Texas knows how hot it is...the penguin exhibit is kept around 55)

Well, if you are going to the home town of Admiral Nimitz, go to the WWII Pacific Theatre museum.

If there's only one important thing I've learn from Pee-Wee Herman, it's that there's no basement in the Alamo.

if there is only one important thing i've learned from Ozzy Osbourne, it is that you don't urinate on the side of the Alamo...
