So.. for the past week or so I thought my coffee hasn't tasted very good. I just decided it was gross bank coffee to begin with and drove on. I use 1 or 2 (depending on my mood) of those little blue cups of the French Vanilla creamer (I have a big mug), so it should be pretty yummy.

Well this morning I noticed the creamer had a weird swirl thing going on, like it was separating. I looked at the box, and they expired in June. But aren't expiration dates kind of a "suggestion", anyway?

Most of the time it states "best" if used before... so it is not its best but still good for years to come laugh

I work with some people that must have steel stomachs. One girl BUYS food that is already expired because it's cheap. sick Right now in our cabinet at work, she has Velveeta from 2008, a can of tuna from 2010, crackers from 2007 and alfredo noodles from 2006. We have another lady that will shew away the fruit flies and eat moldy fruit/veggies in the fridge that could be classified as zombie status. crazy

<<Milk not used by the expiration date is properly disposed of down the drain.

I generally have to go through some of my Dad's food items when I visit. Throw away the stuff that is out of date.

Just some trivia about dates on milk. This comes from my dad who worked for Publix Dairy processing as an engineer on the processing system in one of the processing plants.

The date on milk jugs is a sell by date not an expiration date. The milk you drink that is sold in grocery stores is required by FDA to last (read be good for you to ingest) for a certain amount of time after the sell by date. I don't remember the minimum time frame, but I think it is at least a week. That time frame uses the assumption that you are keeping the milk in the fridge at the right temperature and keeping the lid on the carton. Not keeping it at the correct temp[erature, leaving it out or open, reduces the "safety window". I know that Publix brand milk and Mayfield brand milk will last for 2 weeks after the sell by date provided it is treated right (put the lid on and back in the fridge after each use). So don't just throw that milk away based on the date.

Maybe this will shed some light on what the dates stamped on various food items really means.

I always just eat meat based on the smell. If it does not smell bad, it is fine for me.

It's awful how much food is wasted in this country.
The article, and the examples they linked, were quite interesting. I'm going to forward it to family members to read too.

I will waste food. I don't care, if the "best date" passed, the food/drink is tossed. Leftovers up to 1 week. My husband finally gave in after 22 years of me harping on it. Now, he throws it away before I see it. smile

I'd have to agree if you're talking 'best by date' being passed and the food is showing it.
However, the sell by date is a totally different matter, as the article points out.
And truth be told, based on the left-over, a week may be pushing it.

yuck! food left out drives me crazy! And this is the time of year for those annoying infintesimal flies that congregate by fruit and food. They're so tiny that if someone sees you swatting at them, you look like a raving lunatic! We've got glasses of apple cider vinegar and a drop of Dawn set stratigically about the kitchen to trap them.

I go by smell with milk...if it smells good, it's fine by me. Organic milk lasts way longer than 'grocery store brand'...but I kinda think that has to do with being in a carton vs see-thru plastic.

Other than that...one week on leftovers is crazy. It depends on what KIND of leftover! eek

I don't really pay attention to dates except on dairy...but my cupboards are pretty bare on any given date, so it doesn't really matter anyway. smirk
