We planned a trip to Virginia to go to the Shenadoah National Park and Skyline Drive. Both are now closed due to the shutdown. Our hotel reservations are not in the park. Don't know whether we should change our plans or go anyway and see other sites. Just bummed about the complete disfunction in Washington. Where is a post-partisan heal the world leader when you need one?

You can go to visit congress, since there is a government shutdown you should not notice any difference in activity.

I had to laugh, locally the Ohio River is considered a "National Park", so if you go to the boat ramp there is a sign saying the "Park is closed due to Gov't Shutdown".
The lot was still full of boat trailers, guess no one could read.

They have tried to shut down a local boat launch that is in a "national river system". Had armed guards there, but in south Louisiana the local fishermen carry guns as well, and apparently bigger ones, because the government flunkies left...

Amber Alert website is down, but the Michelle Obama "don;t eat to much" website still functions.
And heard on the news today they will be retro-paying all the employees who are not working once they return to work...so it appears that they are getting extra vacation days...

Had armed guards there, but in south Louisiana the local fishermen carry guns as well, and apparently bigger ones, because the government flunkies left... So they are willing to pay to have armed guards there to keep the people out, but not willing to pay the park ranger to be there to let people in....???? This is a prime example of what a grandstanding farce this whole thing is. We have a trail with a tunnel that is deemed a national park nearby. There is rarely a ranger there, and the gate to get in is almost always left open. To make their point, they went to the trouble of sending someone out to lock the gate. Which would have worked, except that there is no gate at the other end of the trail.

Reminds me of the old Nipsy Russell bit: "if pro- is the opposite of con-.......and progress means 'to go forward'....what does 'congress' mean?"

"Which would have worked, except that there is no gate at the other end of the trail." Excellent metaphor for the fecklessness of the public sector.

I was hoping construction would stop, but apparently the projects nearby are state funded because the've got lanes closed as usual. We have a section of road that is being fixed. It has a good amount of traffic in a day. The funds are from federal dollars and the construction company pulled out. The road is tore up enough where it can't be opened so there is sits until the dollars start to come back in.

Not to mention they have told the people being furloughed to treat it like a paid vacation if they are salaried, because they'll be paid backpay when they go back to work.... sigh...

'paid vacation' isn't quite as posh as it sounds. It really means that furlough days come out of your annual leave, or vacation days.
Similar to being told that work you miss because of a flood, or snowstorm or hurricane comes out of your vacation.
