Who's here today? Just a couple of banks in our area are closed. Wish we were one of them...

Pet peeve: It really shouldn't even be a holiday in this country. Columbus didn't discover anything and he really wasn't that great of a guy. (Ask the "Indians" as he called them - the idiot thought he was in India.) We need to chuck it completely and make "Veterans Day" a full national holiday just like Memorial and Independence days... Gee, I feel better. “In January we commemorate the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., who struggled to lift the blinders of racial prejudice and to cut the remaining bonds of slavery in America. In October, we honor Christopher Columbus, who opened the Atlantic slave trade and launched one of the greatest waves of genocide known in history.” Jack Weatherford

Here in South Dakota, we call it Native American Day, not Columbus Day. Whatever it's called, we're here.

In a way that would suggest some of the things you write have merit, and in a way that would discredit what you write. 500 years gives people plenty of time to revise history over and over again.

Considering we remained open during hurricane Isaac and employees drove through crazy wind and trees being hurled across roads only to discover that so much water was covering the most of the roads that we had no choice but to turn around and go home....yeah, we're definitely open today.

well, clearly if people were already here when Columbus arrived he disn't discover it. However, by mapping the routes and setting up trade with the carribean islands, he did pave the way for other merchant seagoers to also begin trading with the new world, ultimately leading to settlements.
Did Columbus treat the indians any worse than the settlers who came from england did? may want to do some research into how American's treated the indians in the 1700 and 1800s before we start talking about eliminating holidays...

Totally agree. Colombus did not enslave the natives. The Spanish however, mostly did. That said, most were dead by the time the conquistadors arrived. Pigs had smallpox changed history. I realize that people from Europe and Asia had been here first (and that does not even take into account the people already living here), but at those times sea travel was too unpredictable and the Spanish paved the way for development of a new world. I am with you on this one.

So he didn't treat them any worse than some other group. Still didn't treat them any better. Assuming you are attributing the actions of a country to an individual person who had not policy control over the issue, sure!
