Chopin is pretty good, and Beethoven is the master, but I'll always be partial to Rachmaninov, Debussy, and Schumann when it comes to piano.

I'm quite fond of "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Rhapsody in Blue" when performed on piano, as originally written.

Where in NJ do you go to hear that?

If you want to listen to something truly unique, look for the two albums by Wayne Bedrosian (Jazzical Class and Rhapsody in Blue). They were recorded in the 80's I believe, and are available on CD. In addition to his own compositions, he took classical, jazz, and popular music and embellished it for piano, similar to what Liberace did, only I actually liked it a lot better. I learned to love Rhapsody in Blue and American in Paris from him. He also recorded the theme song from Chariots of Fire (another contemporary piano composition I really love). I don't remember if either album contained any of his original work (but now I want to go back and look). Wayne was actually a family friend when I was growing up, so I got to spend lots of time with him (usually at a piano bar in those days). Unfortunately, he died in 2005, unexpectedly young. http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.obits/19998/mb.ashx

No Elton John or Billy Joel songs? I've always considered Elton John to be at his best when it's just him at the piano by himself.

Buggs,
Have you listened to Elton John's latest, "The Diving Board", yet?

No. I still need to listen to Tom Jones' latest. How does Sir Elton do? Isn't he kinda short on his high notes these days?

He is, but he's been smart about key selections. So far I like it, and will listen to it a few more times. It's the kind of Elton John record I particularly like; Bernie Taupin lyrics, small ensemble arrangements, focus on piano.

Thanks for the tip!

I watched a clip of Elton John playing Tiny Dancer in Las Vegas at the iTunes Festival this year. He really had to change the melody quite a bit. It's OK with me. He's allowed.
