French Take Most Vacation, Feel Least Satisfied


A new poll reveals that a striking number of vacation days went unused by Americans in the past year.

According to Expedia's 2013 Vacation Deprivation survey, an opt-in online "analysis of vacation habits among 8,535 employed adults across 24 countries and five continents," Americans were afforded on average 14 days of vacation but only took 10.

With approximately 144 million Americans currently employed, that means collectively more than 500 million available days of vacation were not taken.

"No one retires wishing they'd spent more time at their desk," said John Morrey, vice president and general manager, Expedia.com. "There are countless reasons that vacation days go unused – failure to plan, worry, forgetfulness, you name it. But rested employees are more productive employees, so taking regular vacations may well help the company more than failing to do so."

How about the real reason ppl don't take vacation: They have too much work to do???

I have five days left to take by December 31, and come heck or high water, I'm going to take them. I'm taking the Friday after T-day, and the two days after Christmas, and I'll find a spot for the other two. I've earned every minute of my time off.

I have 15 1/2 days left, I did however go to Florida for a week, and also to Chicago for BSA/AML Institute for 5 days. Lucky enough to only have been sick 1 day. (Knock on wood)!!! We are lucky enough that if we don't use all of our days, we can bank them for next year, or get paid out for them.

Last year I lost almost 2 weeks of my vacation. If I don't use them I will lose them. So...I have 8 days left to use by end of year, I am taking 3.5 days over Christmas to go to Vegas. I plan to find 4.5 more days (including tomorrow!) so need to find 3.5 more as I REFUSE to lose my days again.

I can't imagine letting even one go to waste. I take all 26 days, 5 weeks vacation & 1 floating holiday. Ours is take it or pay it out (California doesn't allow a "loose it"), and the bank won't pay it out. I used to hate this policy, I liked to roll mine over, but now I love it, forces management to allow people to take off the time. I've used most of it from early year snow skiing, taking off 2 days at Thanksgiving, then off for 2 days first of December for a ski trip at Heavenly, then off for Christmas. Then digging into my next years accrual for a Jan 1st ski trip. Yep, don't waste a single day.

If ItNeverEnds' bank does what mine does all vacation, and sick time rolls into one big ball called "Paid Time Off".

I have 28 days total. My challenge is that I usually like to take it all at one time....

I get 20 days, which is an exception to the HR policy, so every year I have to remind HR that she needs to add vacation days for me in the payroll system. We lose them if we don't take them. No roll over, and no payouts. We also have 3 personal days which get paid out if we don't use them, so I don't use them.

I get five weeks vacation and seven personal days for a grand total of 32 days. We are allowed to carry over 30 days from year to year. After I have accumulated the 30 days (which I've had for eons), I can get paid for up to 6 1/2 days of unused time. The other 25.5 days are use or lose.

Yes- it's a lot of time, but I've put in 34 years here to get it!

I have 13.5 days left and no idea how I am going to use them all.

Our employee manual does not allow half days. Wish it did.

I have a few days left and am scared to use them. This time last year I got sick and ran out of time. I don't want that to happen again.

Are you in a common law state?

3. Suddenly stupid

I get 15 vacation days, and I may use up to 3 of my sick days as personal days, each year. Days may not be carried over; use them or lose them. Last year, I lost 1 vacation day and 1 personal day. Not gonna let that happen again this year.

Been here 27 years, am an EVP, and I get 15 freaking vacation days.

Nope, that's just vacation! I get 12 sick days a year, which can be rolled over. Been here 7.5 years (before the bank opened, we were a de novo), started with 3 weeks, got an extra week when I hit 4 years, but also got a promotion to SVP which came with an extra week! Woo hoo! It's probably the only perk I have and I'm taking it. Starting a de novo is rough.

I do not have the problem of not using them.

I currently have 5 weeks of sick time (210 or so hours) and about 100 hours of vacation I'm sitting on, plus three or maybe four "personal days". Some of the vacation time will pay out at year end, and I think my sick time will all roll over to next year, where I'll stop accruing it at some point (oh well!).

I don't want to take vacation. I still have to keep somewhat plugged in to work, and there's just too much waiting to catch up on when I get back!

Plus, I can't fake sick, and if I didn't come to work, I'd either be spending money somewhere, or sitting at home doing nothing. I'd rather be productive, it's less stressful than knowing I have stuff I need to do that isn't getting done.

I have asked multiple times for them to let me sell or at least donate my time, but they won't let me.

On the flip side, my wife gets 40 hours PTO per year, and 6 months into the year it was all gone and she was taking unpaid time off Wish I could transfer it to her.

Once my 10 days are up, I tell my boss I'm taking more. I don't care if it's unpaid, because I have military retirement coming in. He knows I don't care if they fire me. I guess they like my work - they put up with me. I think I'll tell him I now want 15 days.

i have 9 days left to take...my boss keeps reminding me to get busy taking them...
