Fifty years ago today...wow. Knowing that the majority of you were not born yet, it is still a milestone for those who were.
I was in school in the 7th grade. In the middle of a class period, they turned on the "public address" system (pretty unusual because it had crappy sound quality and was never used). The national news was playing and we laughed because we assumed someone had turned it on accidentally. Then, the announcer said, "I repeat, the President was shot today as he drove through Dallas, Texas in a motorcade. His condition is unknown, but he appears to have been severely wounded."
When the bell rang and we changed classes the halls were silent, completely silent except some girls were crying. The President of the United States was about my father's age and that made it even more surreal. The possibility of nuclear war was a common topic at the time, even for 7th graders, and we wondered if this might be the beginning.

Not born yet. but now I live in Dallas so this is a topic we've been hearing lots about this month. I've been to the Grassy Knoll (still looks a lot like it did then - or at least it did before this fall, when they did some road work....). I've been to the 6th Floor Museum (very touching) and to Parkland Hospital, to the underground rooms they took him to.

I was in 5th grade and we had just finished gym class. We had just walked up the stairs to the 2nd floor and another teacher came running down the hallway with the news that Kennedy had been shot. We all sat in our classroom listening to the news feed via the PA system. When the announcement came that he had died we were sent home.
I remember this like it was just yesterday.

Not born yet either. I did visit the Grassy Knoll when I was in Dallas once.

I was 2 1/2, so I don't remember; however my husband was in 6th grade and was telling people yesterday in a meeting exactly what happened in his grade school - he remembers every part of that day.

I was in grade school, we didn't have a working PA system, so I remember Sr. Climacus coming into the classroom and speaking with the teacher. We were all sent home. Once I got home, I sat with my mom and brothers and sisters to watch the news.

I was in 4th grade. I remember one of the teachers crying, and they sent us home early. I went over to my friend's house down the block, because he had a transistor radio. We were listening to the news reports, and I remember that at one point the police had a suspect named Lee Harvey (at least that's what I could hear on the fuzzy radio).
Still can't believe that was half a century ago.

Ed...did you make that name up? Sr. Climacus? Oh dear, no. She was probably 70 years old, Sister of St. Joseph, full penguin, totally intimidating. quite fond of smacking rulers on my left hand to get me to write right-handed. One of 2 things prompted her to stop; she broke a ruler in the process, or, my handwriting with my right hand was so much worse than with my left.

Where I am supposed to be

I was 7 years from being born. Man I did not realize there were that many people older than I am who are still working. I have visited Dealey Plaza and the 6th Floor Museum. It is a neat but sobering experience.

I was 7, and in second grade, but I have no memories of that day at all. I'm wondering if I've blocked it out as too traumatic. However, I clearly remember Ruby shooting Oswald.
