I read to my nieces a lot from "Where The Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein. I had a 5th grade teacher who would read aloud to us various Shel Silverstein poems, and I still remember some of them by heart!

We had a song we sang for The Missing Piece. I still could sing it by heart, even today. In grade school I did The Giving Tree as my first "speech".

In these parts, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a spicy chicken plate from Chuy's..... Love Chuy's! They opened one in Charlotte, but it's not the same as the one I went to in Austin. As far as books, when I was a kid I liked to read Encyclopedia Brown, The Mad Scientists Club, and Swiss Family Robinson.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle anything by Louis L'amour
Yeah, I liked these also. Made me remember two more I liked when I was younger - "Ben and Me", and "Mr. Revere and I" by Robert Lawson.

When I was very little, I loved all the Dr. Seuss books. (In a People House, The B Book, Horton Hears a Who, etc.) I've memorized so many of them from reading them to my kids/grandkids over and over and over again.
But, my earliest memories of books are the Golden Books. They were small enough for little hands to manage and they were illustrated so well. I remember Pokey Little Puppy (my favorite), The Little Engine that Could, Little Toot, The Little Toaster, etc. I made sure my kids and grandchildren were exposed to them, too. They also loved them.
My favorite 'newer' children's book is "The Runaway Bunny". Very sweet.
Maybe I'm just showing my age.....

My favorites as a small child were Where the Wild Things Are and pretty much anything from Dr. Seuss (One Fish, Two Fish was a particular favorite. I also remember enjoying Where the Sidewalk Ends. Once I was a little bit older I would read anything I could get my hands on, but A Wrinkle In Time and Black Beauty were ones I read repeatedly. It wasn't long after that I got hooked on fantasy and started reading Tolkein.

We read tons of the Golden Books when I was little. I loved Judy Bloom books. Also loved Ramona & Beezus and Little House on the Prairie.
When my son was little, the favorites were anything by Sandra Boynton, and the Junie B Jones books.

I remember a book I loved when I was in grade school. It was called something like 'From the Mixed Up Files of Ms. Basil E. Frankwiler' and was about two young children who ran away and lived in a museum for a bit.
Oh - and books about the 'Littles'.
Good memory - thanks for starting this thread.

I was thinking about all the wonderful books listed in this thread when I was driving to work this morning, and I remembered how much I loved a series of books by Marguerite Henry about horses: "Misty of Chincoteague" and "Stormy, Misty's Foal" and "Seastar: Orphan of Chincoteague". Wonderful books with great illustrations that started my lifelong love affair with horses.

I read every horse book in my elementary school library. The Marguerite Henry books, the Walter Farley (Black Stallion) books, National Velvet, My Friend Flicka, etc... I still have my mom's childhood copy of Black Beauty - printed in England.

My son liked The Magic Treehouse series when he was in 1st grade or so. He would devour them each week, coming home from the library.

Grimm's Fairy Tales An assortment of Golden Books and Dr. Seuss Anything "Horse".\ Call of the Wild and most things Jack London James Herriott Nancy Drew We (husband and I) have Goodnight Moon memorized. During those nights when our daughter was in the hospital when we'd left it behind at home, we would recite it to her to get her to go to sleep. We have 2 copies of the books, both are torn and tattered. I started to read it to my 10 year old the other evening at bedtime, my husband smiled as he walked in, joining in, my daughter rolled her eyes at us and reminded us that she's not a baby anymore. Happy post of the day!
