Raggedy Anne and Andy, Heidi, The Happy Hollisters series, The book about a girl that used light reflection for prisms, mean old man next door, she got sick, etc. I forgot the title! Also, a bit later, Ray Bradbury books, esp. The Martian Chronicles.

Circa 4th grade: "The Bears of Blue River." Mrs. Dennis, our teacher, read it to the entire class.

For my oldest daughter, now 26, "Bears in Pairs." The art was good and the narrative accommodated sort of a dramatic, rhythmic reading. She got enthralled with it at about 18 months and would drag it around until she found someone, anyone, to read it to her. She would pound on the pages and squeal the entire time. The pounding eventually did it in and it eventually got lost in the flotsam and jetsam.

One of her Christmas presents this year is a new copy of the book (now a collector's item and cheap at $100, ouch) and a picture of "Pop Pop," gone for 12 years, reading it to her. It will be a hit.

P.S. Martian Chronicles was great. Tarzan of the Apes and Treasure Island were among my first really memorable books. I had the entire James Bond series in paperback on my shelf by the age of 13.

Ohh, speaking of sad ones "Where the Red Fern Grows." One of the fifth grade teachers at my elementary school would read that to her classes at the end of every year and cried everytime.

^^^^^Great book and the same thing here....our 5th grade teacher read it to the entire class, which led to me reading it on my own approximately 15 times.

My daughter loved "Are You My Mother" We had to read it to her everynight before she would go to bed. And if you skipped a line or made something up, "OH NO, that's not what it says daddy"

She is a senior this year and it makes me sad to know whe will be leaving soon. frown

Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I got the set for a Christmas present when I was in the 5th grade. Good stuff.

Don't. It's really, really sad! I read it in grade school, then did a reading of the "Goodbye, Old Dan and Little Ann" speech for a an oral interpretation competition my senior year. The whole room was in tears.
