Thought this was pretty cool!

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944 and is perhaps best known as the aircraft whose missions over Japan helped bring about the end of World War II. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, with longer range and greater bomb loads. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s.

It's a shame there is only one still flying. I hope they preserve it for as long as possible. I'm a WW2 aviation geek. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to be a Mustang pilot, until I was crushed to learn they had been retired.

I know there are a still a handful of B-17s flying around, and I walked through one when it stopped nearby a couple years ago.

I liked the Lancaster flyover (with the Spit and Hurricane) at the Prince Will's wedding. The Merlin engines have a beautiful sound.

I live about 2.5 - 3 miles from the airport where it will be.

The Enola Gay is on display at the second A&S Museum out at the airport near the civil war battle sites of First and Second Manassas.

I wanted to be a "Flying Tiger" and fly P-40s. I watched "God is My Co-Pilot" about 50 times. I came across Claire Chennault's gravestone (near the eternal flame) in Arlington one day and it was an awakening...

Thanks for the mention of the Enola Gay's location. I've thought about visiting Bull Run this summer and that may seal the deal.

One of the elementary schools in this area does an annual Veteran's day program for the Vets at the CAF. They have had many boxed lunches sitting and chatting with the vets under the wings of FIFI while she was housed here. Very cool experience.

My grandfather flew a b-25. I remember when it came to the museum here it was a big deal for us. Everyone said he really loved flying.

Soaring over Georgia
Wish I could have been there. I was in Georgia today, but was headed to Atlanta airport to head back to KC following a house-hunting trip this weekend in Lake Oconee. Be back on Friday and start the new job on Monday.

Love old airplanes of all types.

Got to take a spin in a B-25 once. Pretty potent old airplane. Really set one back in his seat as it accelerated down the runway. Still can't see how they managed to successfully get 'em off the deck of the Hornet when they undertook the Doolittle Raid.

I remember flying in a DC3 from Witchita KS to Denver when I was about 22 (1979). It made it ok, but I never felt anything shake so bad on take off and landing in my life! I thought it was really cool to fly in this ld plain from the 30's (maybe 40's), but the lady in front of me was about to lose her mind!

Those Denver landings can be rough in any plane.

Love the old warbirds. We had a B-17 flyover one day, and all I could imagine were how loud hundreds of them must have been. I live near Columbia, SC, and the airport here was a B-25 base in WWII, and they practiced dropping dummy bombs on the islands in the local lake. They even pulled an old B-25 out of the lake a few years back.

When I was a kid I got to take a ride in an old 2-seater scout plane. Pretty cool for a little kid. Love the small planes, you can see everything.

Also flew in a DC-3 once out of the same airport that hosted the B-25. Was a pre-war airplane, apparently converted to military C-47 configuration and then reconverted after the war.

Once took a leisurely plane ride over the Duxford, England area in a 1932 De Havilland Dragon Rapide.

Color and paint scheme was much like this one (if the link opens).

Backstreets, we have a lake here used as a bombing range...or maybe "used" as...since we are now a rescue mission base instead of a fighter.
