Been trying to transition over to the Paleo Diet. Has anyone out there currently on it or at least tried it? Have you felt healthier since the switch?

Also how do you handle going out to eat? I'm finding it hard to find something Paleo friendly at restaurants.

Any advice/recipes would be great smile

Not much of a Diet person but there are several here. What is the purpose of the diet; health? loose weigh? sober up?

Personally, I've never been able to completely transition to Paleo. That said, I do get recipes from Michelle Tam's blog "nomnompaleo.com", and she offers tips on dining out.

EdAudit- Just trying to be healthier and I guess lose a few pounds. I've heard a lot about this diet and decided to give it a try. I'm definitely not a diet person so its been quite a transition for me.

EdSpenser- I don't think I'll ever be able to completely transition to Paleo. I like my cheese too much to give it up. I actually bought the book NomNom Paleo a few weeks ago, and have liked the recipes I've tried so far.

I really liked the Korean short-rib crock pot recipe.

I've gone reduced Gluten/Paleo-ish and feel 100% better. It may sound like I'm half assing it but I don't need to make myself nuts or my family trying to go all out.

My wife did/does the Paleo thing and it totally wacked out my body and now I have issues with milk and banannas!

I support moderation in all things including diet, don't change too crazy or too fast.

I don't agree with these type of diets, but to each his own. Eat whole foods, buy organic whenever possible, but don't limit yourself unless you have a true sensitivity.

I agree. This died is no more effective in the long run than atkins.

"The Primal Blueprint" is a pretty sensible take on the same basic theme. http://www.marksdailyapple.com (you can keep your cheese)

I know a few people that have had success with it, but mostly short term. If you find it interesting or doable for you, I would encourage you to try it. There are a number of web sites that are helpful and many of the restaruants in our area actually advertise as paleo or gluten friendly now.
Having said that, the only thing that I have found to work for people in the long term is a a balanced diet, with moderate portion control and regular exercise.
The only thing that I would remove from our diet is refined sugar. we dont need it because our bodies make the only sugar we need when we feed it properly. Pretty much everything else (protein, carbs, good fats, veggies and such) we need. smile

I do well on Atkins, and I also do well on South Beach which is a little easier to maintain. One of my coaches does Paleo because he has a number of food allergies which can really mess him up.

The first couple of steps in transitioning to Paleo are things that I need to work at; drinking more water, eating breakfast within 30 minutes of waking, adding greens to each meal.

Ed, you can sneak baby spinach into almost everything and sometimes not even know it!

which is my trick for breakfast, basically. Spinach, kale, collards, mustard greens, I just keep some in the fridge to throw into eggs.

And broccoli-slaw is my go-to for lunch.

Here's something to try too...purple cabbage, cauliflower, onions, garlic and spinach. Put it in a iron skillet in that order with just a little olive oil...wilt it, sprinkle with rice wine or apple cider vinegar. Serve.

Goes with EVERYTHING!

and then yesterday the research study comes out that vegetarians are less healthy than non-vegs, not as happy (seriously who isn't happy eating a well-done delilciously cooked steak!), and are at greater risk for a number of long term health issues...

Thanks for all the responses.

Joker- that recipe sounds great. I might try that tonight with my nice medium well steak smile

Monkee- I'm right there with you. My diet is definitely a Paleo-ish diet and not full Paleo. When the rest of the family isn't Paleo its hard to do Paleo for every meal.

I have a great Farmer's Market 5 minutes away so I try to buy local/organic as much as I can. Plus I have a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods about 1/2 hour away.

the best diet is learning portion control...and minimizing the amount of sugar or artifically laden carbonated beverages...drink a ton of water...and do some type of exercise daily...if it comes from a drive-thru window, chances are it's not going to be good for you
