Our policy is to always rekey safe deposit boxes after they have been closed and before they are re-rented, even when both keys have been returned. It costs about $40 per box to rekey. Are there any any banks out there that do not rekey the boxes when both keys have been returned?

we don't...well, with a caveat. We will swap the locks with another empty box if we feel the need to do so, but that has not happened in a long time

Our approach is similar to Happy's. When we have about 6-10 empties in the same location, we'll shuffle the locks around.

We do the same as Happy and JacFSB. The only time we re-key locks anymore (when both keys have been returned) is if we have a just-vacated box in a very large size (we often do not have large size boxes available). In that case, it might be cost-effective to have the lock re-keyed and re-rent the box rather than wait until we have 10 boxes empty to shuffle them.

Does a locksmith have to do the shuffling, or can you do it yourself?

Do your keys have the box number engraved on them?

we can perform the changing of the locks ourselves. our keys have a number on them, but it is a code to the box, not the box number (such as 7X89-W, which translates per our spreadsheet to box 4A)

That doesn't work in Texas where the key has to be stamped with the box number......

Randy - isn't it routing number in Texas, instead of box number?
