is it culturally acceptable to eat the food you are about to buy? So, if you buy a bag of oreos, can you tear into them in the aisle (assuming you're going to still pay for them like normal)

What about tasting a grape before you buy the whole bunch? What if it's sour and then you dont buy any? Does it matter if the store allows you to sample deli meat before deciding what to buy?

Well, what if you ate the whole thing of OREO's and then accidentally, without thinking, threw away the wrapper without paying.

Bad idea.

Then, let's discuss tasting a grape...this would mean you likely didn't WASH the grape before eating it.

Again, bad idea.

I don't think it matters about the deli sample you are handed and either take it or don't.

This is one of my pet peeves. I constantly see people get food from the deli, eat it while shopping, then leave the empty container on a shelf...essentially stealing it. Peanuts, grapes, etc. are also eaten on a regular basis. Ugg. mad

I know I for one, have sampled a grape or two. Once I had my granddaughter with me who had a runny nose, and we opened a box of Kleenes that was in our cart. We did buy both items. Now, the Oreos, I would think that would be a different matter. My opinion only.

I can see tasting a grape, but I recall when I was about 8 getting busted by my mom and having to seek out the manager and apologize for stealing...so yeah, you won't see me doing that! (I don't care about the non-washed part of it though, obviously).

My wife used to work at a bank branch that was inside Walmart, she talked about this pair of women that would come in, get rotisserie chickens, and eat the whole things while rolling around the store in the electric wheelchair things. Apparently there was nothing the store could or would do about it, and couldn't consider it "theft". I never got that, or why in the world people would do it.

let's say you do in fact pay for the oreos once they're opened.

and you may or may not buy grapes after testing one or two. But either way you are not paying for the couple that you ate at first. Is the grocery store ok with that? i mean, it would depend on the particular owner, but in general?

The thing about the grapes etc is you typically pay for those by weight. So if you're busily eating them through the store, you pay a lower price when you get them weighed at the register. And that is, pretty much, stealing. (I also agree with whomever said they're unwashed too.... sick)

Being a product of the 80's I learned you had to put a quarter in the machine in order to get your Pac-Man on. In other words pay before you play.
Plus eating unwashed fruit in this day and age is scary. O_o

Ok, so I am guilty of the grape theft. I confess.

I would wipe the grape off though, if that makes it any less germy or anything.

Now I am trying to make myself feel better.

you do realize that all produce is washed before it is shipped to a store, right? and washed again by the store when they put it out, so washing or not washing a grape before eating has no real bearing on anything but food paranoia. but eating a few grapes is, in fact, theft.

as far as eating pre-packaged items...as long as you are paying for the package, it does not matter how many oreos you ate, the cost does not change.

when we were kids, my Dad would get a six pack and drink it while shopping, knocking out 2-3 while he had us 4 kids in tow, putting the full and empties in their container on the register when checking out...frankly, if i were one of my kids, i'd knock back 12 while shopping with me

Does everyone in this forum truly think washing the grapes with water will kill the germs?

No!

But washing olives with gin surely will!

I wouldn't sample grapes or open and eat any food I'm buying when I'm at the grocery. My reason is a little different than what has been mentioned so far, though. Shopping carts are filthy! If my hands have just touched that cart, they are not directly touching food I'm about to consume. I wouldn't even open/eat anything once I got to my car, unless I have been able to wash my hands somewhere once finished with the cart.

I do agree, though, that eating the grapes is theft. I don't think it is theft if you eat a few cookies from the package but are paying for the package at the checkout lane. However, I still wouldn't do it!

What does that have to do with anything? If you can reach in the bag to confiscate one...you can touch them.

Banana Minion...no, not water, but if you dunk them in a vinegar wash solution...then you are fairly safe.

And like Hoosier said...your own hands are a big part of the problem as well!

so in your estimation...how much do you owe the grocery store for your "grape eating" over the years? laugh

JWills, that just made me LOL at my desk. I don't think you will go to jail for one grape...can't made even a penny difference in the cost. wink

Just learn from the error of your ways and stop this errant behavior!
