We accidentally returned an ACH item as R01 (NSF) instead of R10 (Unauthorized). The other bank (correctly) dishonored the return as R68 (Untimely Return). We now need to find a way to return this item with the correct return code. FedLine won’t let us return the original entry for a second time. Also, there does not appear to be a Contested Dishonored Return code that fits this situation. We are still within the time frame to return the item as R10. What options do we have?

been a long time since i've dealt with fedline, but there used to be an option to manually key the return rather than to derive it, try that. If that doesn't work, you need to contact FedACH staff for assistance

FedACH staff would just say that we could repond to the Contested Return using R71-R76. However, none of those codes seem to cover a situation where the wrong return code was used. I do not see any option to manually key a return on FedLine. We have that option on our core, but don't know if the Fed will accept it or not.

If you try to return using "R74-corrected return" will you be able to supply the "corrected data" which would be R10- since you used the incorrect return code the first time?
I am not sure if that would work, but I think I would be inclined to try it. I would probably also contact the RDFI to make them aware of my mistake.

R-74 is to be used when you have received a R-69 from the ODFI. Simply using this code will likely have this item rejected as well as their records will not indicate an error when they contested.
