We have an extra day on our visit to Wyoming. Principally Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. I thought we could venture out one day for a day trek. Not afraid to drive. Any thoughts on either of the two spots....or have ones that are even better?

We went to Yellowstone in 2012, and spent a day in Cody. It is a cute little town. There are lots of shops on the main drag. There is a rodeo there every day, if that is something that interests you. We went to a nice museum all about Wild Bill Cody. I wouldn't necessarily want to spend multiple days there, but it was a fun spot for a brief visit.

Haven't been to Laramie, so I can't compare the two.

We went to Cody from Yellowstone last September. The route we took went thru the Shoshone National Forest or Park or something and it is AWESOME. I thought it was as neat as any part of Yellowstone or the Tetons if not even prettier. The drive follows a small meandering river and the rock cliffs are gorgeous. I would really recommend that drive. We spent the night in Cody and checked out all the shops and the Museum too and the Museum was nice and interesting. We headed home (south) from there.

Can you tell I liked it up there?!

Okie, we did the same drive to get to Cody from Yellowstone. Agreed, it was as pretty as a lot of what we saw in park. We were there in July but I imagine in the fall it would be even prettier.

Are you sure you mean Laramie? That's an awfully long drive for a day trip. And definitely not worth it. No, don't drive all the way to Laramie. I can't imagine that you'd want to go to Laramie.

What about Jackson? Or have you thought about going the other direction into Montana? Go to the NE entrance of Yellowstone and onto the Beartooth Highway. Cooke City is near the top and Red Lodge, MT is on the other side. Beautiful drive (beware if you get carsick) and quaint towns.

My father told me he was taken to a wild west show and saw Buffalo Bill Cody in Denver back in the day.

Probably. I kept thinking that didn't look right but was too lazy to check it. (In my defense, I watched Deadliest Catch the night before and there really is a captain called Wild Bill on that show!) All I know is the museum was filled with a bunch of western, cowboy type stuff that we don't have here in Indiana.

Thanks, everyone. We have Beartooth Hwy in our initial week of our road trip. Can't wait. We are staying for a week in Jackson, too. Cody sounds like a good trip, and we will look into that. We are travelling along the Wyoming/Montana border the first week, landing in Gardner for two days, to visit N. Yellowstone. Traveling down to Jackson for S. Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, then flying back just in time for our compliance examination. Whippee!

If you want to see wildlife, you're going to want to visit the Lamar Valley in the Park. Do you have a spotting scope? Are you doing a guided tour? Or just by yourselves? If you're doing it yourself, I would highly recommend a spotting scope. Things that look like rocks from far away could actually be bears. Or the steep cliffs where it looks like there is nothing are actually filled with mountain goats. But you can't see them without a scope with a tripod. Binoculars are too shaky.

If you're driving and you see lots of cars pulled over, slow down and ask what they're looking at. If you decide to get out, be sure you pull over completely over the white line or you'll get scolded by the Ranger.

Thanks, Justin. We currently plan to do this without a guided tour.

We will look into a spotting scope. We love wildlife and don't want to miss anything.
