I'm totally floored by these pictures.

When I was born, Detroit was a city of 2 million people with the highest median family income of any city in the US America.
And it has been brought to this....

How can a city decline that fast in four or five years? All those nice little homes just fell to pieces. It's interesting to see nature reclaim the vacant lots.

These pictures are heartbreaking. One of the cities featured on this season of Anthony Bourdain's show on CNN was Detroit. They showed so much desolation there, but also talked to a lot of resilient people who seemed determined that Detroit would and could survive this. Hopefully they are right.

It has been in decline since the gas crisis of the 70's.

I couldn't get the link to work. I live about an hour and a half north of Detroit. For the past few years they have had mostly crooks in office, for awhile, every couple of nights, you would hear of someone else who was being investigated for corruption. They had Kwame, they had crooked councilmembers. Now you hear on the news every night about someone being shot, car jacked, etc. Anything bad, they have it. I really don't think that Detroit will ever turn around. Flint, Michigan has also gotten pretty bad, dangerous. You hear more and more about drugs, murders. It is very sad.

This is what happens when industry collapses. The unions put a stranglehold on the very people providing the opportunity that lead to so much prosperity in Detroit.

They need Robocop to clean up the streets so people feel safe enough to risk bringing back businesses and jobs. Otherwise I would not be surprised if the city is taken private by OCP!!!

I love Hardcore Pawn! I tolerated about 5 minutes of that-a bunch of screeching losers trying to pawn a cheap piece of junk jewelry.

It's amazing what people will try to pawn. I saw one episode where someone was trying to pawn a cruddy old microwave.

I'm wondering, how has this altered the downtown area? I've heard large swaths of residential had been abandoned And there were a few commercial zone photos. What's sad is, we partied throughout Detroit in the '90s. Some great memories, there.

5 yrs ago my bosses son played for the Lions, so we would go up for games. We only went for day games, you did not want to be walking the streets after dark.
My wife's boss (dentist) retores cars for car shows. He has a huge ford F 350 that he pulls a huge trailor with to show his 24 Packard. When he went out to truck during the show there was a guy stealing his truck. When he approached the perp, the guy put a gun in his face and said, "how bad you want your truck". Doc said, not that bad.

There's no good reason why the rest of the nation can't also descend into misery, degradation, and squalor as Detroit has, and also accomplish it in a similarly short period of time; what with manipulative, selfish, and irresponsible government, business, unions, and citizens that populate it.

Sound Tactic, that link you posted is really sad. Some of those buildings are architectural gems. What a waste.

I thought the same thing about some of the architecture. The theater pictures were amazing. I had no idea that Detroit had some many nice buildings before the exodus.
