I know best practice when removing a name from an account is to close it and open a new account but If a mother and her minor son have a joint account. The son becomes of legal and wants to remove his mother. With her permission would you do that or would you want to close the account and open a new one?
Thanks

We close it and open another account. There are just too many things that could go wrong (liability)when you remove someone from an account. Besides its easier to follow procedure than it is to explain to the next person why you made the exception in so and so's case but not theirs.

It is a good practice to close and open an new account. It shows a clear paper trail of the transaction. The old one was closed and a new one opened in the son's name. Much easier to do research in the future if needed. Also this way there is no confusion as to what happened to the funds.

Of course this is also assuming that your State law allowed a minor to originally enter into the depository contract to begin with. If not, the fact that the son is now of legal age has no consequence.
