Do many/most banks still use specific account numbering schemes for the different types of deposit accounts they maintain (i.e., basic savings, premium savings, checking, etc.)? And sometimes differentiated by branches?

We're getting to the point where the numbers are just running together and I want to just create one set of numbering for savings accounts, one set for checking accounts, and one for CDs. Other information, for example, branch, personal/business, basic/premium, would be noted by other codes in the records.

It use to be much more prevalent to have such numbering schemes years ago. Nowadays it is really a mixed bag. Some banks do - some banks don't.

Our's used to be differentiated by account type and branch - now they are pretty much generic.

In general, we do still use distinct numbering schemes to differentiate between account types, but... we now allow the changing of account types while keeping the same account number. So overall, we have a mixed bag anyway.
