Hear, O LORD , and be merciful to me;
O LORD , be my help."
You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing to you and not be silent.
O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.

Each morning I thank you for the singing birds, the morning dew and the bright sunshine. I thank you for the love of family and friends. I thank you for my job and the headaches that go with it. Most of all....I thank you for loving us enough to give us the ultimate gift...your son!!

Are you a complainer?

During an afternoon baseball game when American League umpire Bill Guthrie was working behind home plate, the catcher for the visiting team repeatedly protested his calls.

According to a story in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Guthrie endured this for three innings. But in the fourth inning, when the catcher started to complain again, Guthrie stopped him. "Son," he said gently, "you've been a big help to me calling balls and strikes, and I appreciate it. But I think I've got the hang of it now. So I'm going to ask you to go to the clubhouse and show them how to take a shower."

Job also had been complaining about calls he didn't think were fair. In his case, the umpire was God. After listening to Job's objections, the Lord finally spoke out of a violent storm. Suddenly things came into perspective for Job. God was gentle, but He was also firm and direct. The Lord asked him the kind of questions that bring finite man back down to size. Job listened, gave up his complaining, and found peace in surrendering to God.

Father, we don't make sense when we complain about Your fairness. Help us to be like Your Son Jesus, who trusted You without complaining, even to the point of dying on the cross. —Mart De Haan

Thank you for the reminder. That was very well put, and apparently relevant for me today. (no sarcasm, just truth.)

Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them -- do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." Luke 13:1-5

Calamity

Some Christians are quick to declare that a public disaster (such as a terrorist attack, an earthquake, or a flood) is the result of divine judgment. In reality, a complex array of factors lie behind most disasters.

In Luke 13, Jesus was asked about some people who were cruelly murdered, and about 18 people who died when a tower collapsed on them. The people asking the questions were wondering if those who died were worse sinners than others. "I tell you, no," said Jesus, "but unless you repent you will all likewise perish" (vv.3,5).

Instead of reading divine judgment into tragedies, we should see them as a call to personal repentance. This is especially true for unbelievers, but it is also true for Christians. Acts of terrorism, for example, challenge us to learn about the injustices that in part motivate people to commit such horrible atrocities. And we can pray earnestly for the conversion and the good of the desperate people who commit such acts.

Calamities in themselves are never good, but they can fulfill God's purposes when they serve as a wake-up call to believers, and when they bring unbelievers to repentance and faith in Jesus. Let's not ask, "Who's to blame?" but "Lord, what are You saying to me?" —Herb Vander Lugt

I was happily reading this thread and enjoying BOLers sharing their faith. And then I see a political statement right there in the middle, diguised as devotion!

Let's not ask, "Who's to blame?"

You know, I think Christ said to "pray for your enemies", to "turn [your] other cheek." It's not my place to forgive those who organized, planned, or supported terrorist attacks [against others]. That forgiveness can only come from the victims. Our society's responsibility is to bring these individuals to justice, and to ensure that something 9/11 never happens again.

For GOD so loved the world that HE gave HIS only begotten SON, that
whosoever believeth in HIM should not perish but have everlasting
life JOHN 3:16

It's a Wednesday night and you are at a church prayer meeting when
somebody runs in from the parking lot yelling, "Turn on a radio, turn
on a radio!"

And while the church listens to a little transistor radio with a
microphone stuck up to it, the announcement is made: "Two women are
lying in a Long Island hospital dying from a 'mystery' flu." Within
hours it seems, this thing just sweeps across the country.

People are working around the clock trying to find an antidote. Nothing
is working! California, Oregon, Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts.

It's as though it's just sweeping in from the borders.

And then, all of a sudden, the news comes out. The code has been broken.
A cure can be found. A vaccine can be made. It's going to take the blood
of somebody who hasn't been infected, and so, sure enough, all through
the Midwest, through all those channels of emergency broadcasting,
everyone is asked to do one simple thing: Go to your downtown hospital
and have your blood type taken. That's all we ask of you. When you hear
the sirens go off in your neighborhood, please make your way quickly,
quietly, and safely to the hospitals.

Sure enough, when you and your family get down there late on that
Friday night, there is a long line, and they've got nurses and doctors
coming out and pricking fingers and taking blood and putting labels
on it.

Your wife and your kids are out there, and they take your blood type
and they say, "Wait here in the parking lot and if we call your name,
you can be dismissed and go home."

You stand around, scared, with your neighbors, wondering what in the
world is going on and if this is the end of the world.

Suddenly a young man comes running out of the hospital screaming. He's
yelling a name and waving a clipboard. What? He yells it again! And
your son tugs on your jacket and says, "Daddy, that's me."

Before you know it, they have grabbed your boy. Wait a minute! Hold on!

And they say, "It's okay, his blood is clean. His blood is pure. We
want to make sure he doesn't have the disease. We think he has got the
right type." Five tense minutes later, out come the doctors and nurses,
crying and hugging one another .. some are even laughing. It's the first
time you have seen anybody laugh in a week, and an old doctor walks up to
you and says, "Thank you, sir. Your son's blood type is perfect. It's
clean, it is pure, and we can make the vaccine." As the word begins to
spread all across that parking lot full of folks, people are screaming
and praying and laughing and crying.

Then the gray-haired doctor pulls you and your wife aside and says, "May
we see you for moment? We didn't realize that the donor would be a minor
and we need ...... we need you to sign a consent form." You begin to sign
and then you see that the number of pints of blood to be taken has been
left blank.

"H-how many pints?", you ask.

And that is when the old doctor's smile fades and he says, "We had no
idea it would be little child. We weren't prepared. I'm sorry sir, we
need it all!"

"But but . You don't understand."

"We are talking about the world here. Please sign. We need it all!"

"But can't you give him a transfusion?"

"If we had clean blood we would. Can you sign? Would you sign?"

In numb silence, you do.

Then they say, "Would you like to have a moment with him before we
begin?"

Can you walk back? Can you walk back to that room where he sits on a
table saying, "Daddy? Mommy? What's going on?"

Can you take his hands and say, "Son, your mommy and I love you, and
we would never ever let anything happen to you that didn't just have
to be. Do you understand that?"

And when that old doctor comes back in and says, "I'm sorry, we've GOT
to get started! People all over the world are dying.

Can you leave?"

Can you walk out while he is saying, "Daddy? Mommy? Daddy? "Why, why
have you forsaken me?"

And then next week, when they have the ceremony to honor your son some
folks sleep through it .. some folks don't even come because they go to the
lake or the seashore ... some folks come with a pretentious smile and just
"pretend" to care. Would you want to jump up and say, "MY SON DIED FOR YOU!
DON'T YOU CARE?"

Is that what GOD wants to say? "MY SON DIED FOR YOU. DON'T YOU KNOW HOW
MUCH I CARE?"

"FATHER, Seeing it from YOUR eyes breaks our hearts. Maybe now we can
begin to comprehend the great Love YOU have for us.

With thanks to Bev Mauerman

I place this day, my life, my loved ones, my work in the Lord's hands. There is no harm in the Lord's hands, only good. Whatever happens, whatever results, if I am in the Lord's hands, it is the Lord's will and it is good.

Wish everyone a restful weekend. Next weekend we have a bankwide conversion which hits the same weekend we change where we send out cash letter (from Charleston WV to Cincinnati OH). Then, a week and a half later we are opening our first branch. My vacation time appears to be very far off now....I'm dreaming of September.

It seems that I am very much in need of reminders right now. From a song that we sing at church:

All I once held dear, built my life upon,
All this world reveres and wars to own...
All I once thought gain, I have counted loss,
Spent and worthless now, compared to this.

Knowing you, Jesus, knowing you...
There is no greater thing.
You're my all, you're the best,
You're my joy, my righteousness...
And I love you, Lord.

All over the map.
Relax your mind and humble your heart to focus on Christ.
Allow God, to be the only person on your mind while you read this prayer.
If we can take the time to read long jokes, stories, etc., we should give
the same respect to this prayer.
Friends that pray together, stay together.

Dear Lord, I thank You for this day. I thank You for my being able to see
and to hear this morning.
I'm blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God.
You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me.
Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not
pleasing to you.
I ask now for Your forgiveness.

Please keep me safe from all danger and harm.
Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude.
Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can
hear from You.
Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things.
Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over.
Let me continue to see sin through God's eyes and acknowledge it as evil.
And when I sin, let me repent, and confess with my mouth my wrongdoing,
and receive the forgiveness of God.

And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus' example -
to slip away and find a quiet place to pray.
It's the best response when I'm pushed beyond my limits.
I know that when I can't pray, You listen to my heart.
Continue to use me to do Your will.
Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others.
Keep me strong that I may help the weak.
Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others.
I pray for those that are lost and can't find their way.
I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood.
I pray for those who don't know You intimately.
I pray for those that will delete this without sharing it with others.
I pray for those that don't believe.
But I thank you that I believe.

I believe that God changes people and God changes things.
I pray for all my sisters and brothers, and for each and every family member
in their households.
I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and
all their needs are met.

I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem,
circumstance,
or situation greater than God.
Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight.
I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees
them
and every mouth that confesses them willingly.

This is my prayer.
In Jesus' Name, Amen

LET US KEEP TO THE POINT

"My eager desire and hope being that I may never feel ashamed, but that now as ever I may do honour to Christ in my own person by fearless courage." Philippians 1:20 (MOFFATT)

My Utmost for His Highest. "My eager desire and hope being that I may never feel ashamed." We shall all feel very much ashamed if we do not yield to Jesus on the point He has asked us to yield to Him. Paul says - "My determination is to be my utmost for His Highest." To get there is a question of will, not of debate nor of reasoning, but a surrender of will, an absolute and irrevocable surrender on that point. An overweening consideration for ourselves is the thing that keeps us from that decision, though we put it that we are considering others. When we consider what it will cost others if we obey the call of Jesus, we tell God He does not know what our obedience will mean. Keep to the point; He does know. Shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only - My Utmost for His Highest. I am determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone.

My Undeterredness for His Holiness. "Whether that means life or death, no matter!" (v.21.) Paul is determined that nothing shall deter him from doing exactly what God wants. God's order has to work up to a crisis in our lives because we will not heed the gentler way. He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him, and we begin to debate; then He produces a providential crisis where we have to decide - for or against, and from that point the "Great Divide" begins.

If the crisis has come to you on any line, surrender your will to Him absolutely and irrevocably.

From Oswald Chamber's My Utmost For His Highest
