Anywhere I want to be
After around 10 years of using my TaylorMade irons, I'm thinking it may be time to get a new set. I've been looking around and reading the various reviews, but so many seem to be close to the same. Does anyone have any recommendations good or bad about various brands or models?

I love my Pings i bought a few years ago. Was able to get them custom fit for me at the driving range where i bought them. (And i hated the old Pings with their funky clubhead shape, but these don't have that shape.) I went with the idea of buying Callaways, but i liked the Pings better and hit them better.

I don't like Nike irons either, FWIW.

I have and like Cleveland Irons. (unfortunately no time for golf).

OK now that that is out of the way.

It is best to have whatever you buy fitted to you.

I did not have mine fitted but the biggest difference for me was changing from the composite shafts to steel. I have better control with the steel ones and the shorter hike through the woods was appreciated.

That would be the Nike as listed above.

I really like my calloway clubs. I have the older x-12, custom fitted. They are very forgiving. I too like the steel shaft better.

I've noticed with Ping & Titleist they keep their prices higher even for 2 year old models whereas Calloway, Cobra, and TaylorMade reduces them quite a bit.

I just bought a Cleveland 60 degree pitching wedge...I really like it. Most of my other irons are junk, Callaway I think.

I bought a nice Taylor Made set a couple years ago (it was the previous year's model so they weren't too expensive)

I'm not that great of a golfer so mine are fine for me

The one thing I didn't like was that there wasn't a three iron available (it came with a #3 hybrid) and forget about finding a two iron for that set

I have Warrior Wedges and really like them. Won them at a Golf Outing, so the price was right grin

Depends on what you are using them for. Ask his ex-wife!

I have a set of Lady Hagens... and I love them. Probably not what you want to use though.

I've played with the same set of Titleist irons for close to 20 years. My woods are an odd assortment: Ping G2 driver, Titleist 3 wood, and a Callaway 7 wood that I won in a tourney ages ago. Titleist Vokey 52 and 56 wedges and an Odyssey two ball putter. I don't really see a need to change. They all work fine when I swing right.

Okay...but we're more interested in something that will work fine when we don't swing right. wink

For Excess, if cost is the main concern definitely look around for older models - you can save a lot of $$ this way. (my last purchase was a new set of 2 yr old Callaways for about $150)

If the main concern is performance, I recommend going to a good shop for a fitting. Usually the cost is applied to your purchase if you end up buying there.

I'd gone 20 years or more with my previous (and up to that time, only new set i'd ever had) clubs. I decided to splurge 5-6 years ago, realizing that this would most likely be the last set of clubs i ever bought. Even my "splurge" is relative........i stayed well under $1000, and that was with a nice bag included.

A Golf Galaxy or a GolfSmith work great aroun our area. I personally prefer Golf Galaxy for trying clubs and buying used ones.

The Golf Galaxy around my place is just 2 miles from Muirfield (Home to Jack and the memorial Tournament, Dublin, OH) and there are a lot of good used clubs there.

is it odd to mix clubs?

I probably could file this under the quirk thread but I've always felt the need to have the same model in my bag (excluding the putter)

so, I have a certain model Taylor Made, it came with a PW-#3 hybrid, I found a matching lob wedge a driver and 3 wood

I can't find a 3 iron (which I would prefer over a hybrid) nor a 2 iron but I'm sure I could find non-Taylor Made ones

would that be too weird having different styles?

My opinion: your irons (3, or as low as you go, through 9) should match. Your wedges can be different (Cleveland, for example, specializes in wedges). Your woods can be different (Taylor Made much known for their drivers and 'woods'). And like you say, putters are always up to whatever feels good to you.
