This is a really silly question but I have been wondering about it now for quite some time and I am WAY too embarrassed to ask anyone I work with. How the heck do you pronounce "HOEPA"???

I pronounce it ho-E-pa (long e sound). I've heard others pronounce it hO-pa (long o sound), but that always confuses me since I think they are talking about HOPA (Home Owners Protection Act), instead of the Home Owners Equity Protection Act.

I've always heard it pronounced: "hoe - e - pa" where the hoe sounds like the gardening tool, the e is a long e, and the pa as in pa being short for dad. I'm sure local dialects may color that pronunciation somewhat.

This reminds me of those that still refer to the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act as HUMDA when writing it in a memo.

Well, I've always said "hoe-EE-pah." But using "subpoena" as a model, I might be convinced to say "HEE-pah."

[As in, "It's a heap o' ...."] (I could not resist)

I have never heard "HEPA", just HOPA (like hope-a), and Hoeeepa.

I prefer Hoeeepa, to differentiate from HOPA, homeowners protection act (PMI).

I'm with Dani. Hoh-ee-pah for HOEPA, and hoh-pah for HOPA. Makes my team laugh when I use them.

Same with TILA.

I pronounce it like till-a-(garden).

I've heard a few say tEEEEla. It makes me furrow my brow for a moment.

We have a fun one - FDICIA. We pronounce it "fuh-dish-uh", but one of our consultants always says "fuh-DEE-sha". We always have to suppress the giggles smile

I always cringed...

Anon2 sez: I say Hoe-ee-pah, but always smile when I hear a mysterious "W" appear in someone's pronunciation:

"Huhwhee-pah." It's like Baby Stewie pronouncing "Cool-Huhwhip."

And please, please, please, everybody needs to start saying "SAR" pronounced like a word like the acronmym which it is, rather than doing what law enf. around here does, which is reading you the letters, "S. A. R." prounced "Ss, Aa, Rr." I always want to ask them if they have ever been "Ss, Cee, You, Bee, Aa" diving.

I used to just call it "Section 32." Now I just call it "high cost."

There is an old joke that the original legislation of FIRREA used to start with Depository rather than Financial.....until they pronounced that acronym.

While we are on the subject, will someone tell those special asset people to stop calling their form a "SAR". BSA had it first!
