If we implement a process to automatically close zero balance checking and savings accounts that have no activity after six months, would this be something that would require customer notification before we can start closing these accounts?

This is a contractual issue. You need to review your depositor's agreement. Most banks close after one full cycle at $0 and not wait six months.
