I can never find the damn free books. frown

I have a new love for audiobooks. It makes my drive home so much better than listening to the same 6 songs on the radio every freaking day. eek

Audiobooks are way better than the radio. No stupid political stuff!

You can also check out audiobooks from electronic libraries. If you can't find free books, you're not looking.

I am pretty lazy and not a techie at all. You can do it. Or get your kids to do it for you. Delegate.

I'm reading the latest Fern Michaels installment of the Sisterhood books - Wishes for Christmas. All these books are a hoot and a half. What they do to people to get revenge is awesome!

Now reading "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara, a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg. I've had a fascination with that battle since my parents took me to Gettysburg when I was still in grade school. A park ranger road with us around the battlefield and explained it all. I took my kids there, but they didn't have the same reaction. I'd like to visit it again.

Listening to a zombie book (not as good as King of Clayfield, although similar premise.)

Reading Jodi Taylor's St Mary's series still, got through a couple of the short stories yesterday and started book 5.

Also reading a thriller I got in a giveaway on Goodreads.

Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. I'm only 250 pages into it but I can tell it's going to be a beating.

I've been trying to decide whether or not to read that one. I love Butcher's Dresden Files series but haven't tried any of his other fantasy books. Is Aeronaut's Windlass high fantasy or steam-punk? Something about the title makes me think steam-punk, which is not usually my genre of choice.

It's steam-punk. Not my favorite genre either and I knew that when I started reading it. I love the Dresden Files and Aeronaut's Windlass is such a step back for him. It's not awful so I will finish it but I won't read any other books in the Cinder Spire series.

OK, thanks. I'll at least wait until the ebook gets discounted, then. Have you read any of his Codex Alera series? I have yet to make myself pick any of those up, either. The descriptions read like video game summaries and...meh. I just can't seem to care.

The Aeronaut's Windlass was at the library so I paid nothing for it. I have not read any of the Codex Alera series for the same reason.

I'm really curious about steam punk - can anyone recommend a good steam punk read? I also liked the Dresden books, so would that make The Aeronaut's Windlass a good place to start, or are there better examples in the genre?

There's a few I've read that I enjoyed and I'm usually more of an urban fantasy reader. Let me see if I can find those titles/authors for you.

I enjoyed Meljean Brooks' "Iron Seas" series, and Katie MacAlister made an amusing foray into steam punk with "Steamed." I don't know if that last one really counts, per se, but it was funny.

I'm pretty sure I've read a couple of others, too, but I can't find them offhand.

Last night I started "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman. My wife finished it the other night, and was crying her eyes out reading the last few pages. It starts out with a 59 year old man who suddenly lost his job. It just so happens I'm 59 and the OCC exit is this afternoon. I hope I don't end up identifying with Ove too much.

I would not recommend Aeronaut's Windlass. It is steam punk but is slow and very long. Like around 650 pages. I'm on 300 and still waiting for something interesting to happen. Try the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. I think that is steam punk and I really liked that series.
