At the bank we've got Country Crock in the break room. I once tried spreading it on my toasted cinnamon bagel and it was so dreadful I had to toss the bagel. No more margarine for me!

RHJ You might try the Land O'Lakes spreadable butter. It comes in a tub and can be spread directly from the fridge. It's real butter with a little margarine mixed in to keep it soft. They even have a light version that's very good. I used to use it until I switched back to the real stuff from Braum's.

Joker, I was afraid of that. frown *sigh*

The LAnd O LAkes spreadable is pretty good, I thought it was mixed with canola oil to keep it soft though.

Either way it's 1,000 times better than margarine.

I bet the olive oil one is yummy too although it might not be good for certain things like pancakes and such.

peanuts, pistachios and cashews in a food processor with a little sea salt makes some pretty wicked butter/spread stuff!

My child's school is "peanut free." So instead of PB&J sandwiches at lunch, they now serve what is called "Sunbutter" sandwiches. I ate lunch with my daughter the other day on what happened to be mac & cheese & sunbutter sandwich day. The package this sandwich came in explained that sunbutter is made from sunflower seeds. It was not that great. I managed to eat about half of it, but only because I forced it down trying to set a good example for the kids to eat everything on their tray!

Way, way south.
So, an entire school of kids suffers because 1.3% of them are allergic to peanuts?

Yep, sounds about right.

From medicine.net:

Quote:
Allergy to peanuts affects 1.3% of the general population. Peanut allergy affects 7 percent of brothers and sisters of persons with the allergy. (British Medical Journal 1996;313:518-521.)

Something doesn't add up in this article. The article says 110 workers make 232 jars every minute. It then says that 3 million jars are filled a day. Well at 232 jars every minute, that's 13,920 jars an hour. If the plant is going 24/7, that's 334,080 jars in a 24 hour day. That's well short of 3 million.

Concerning spreadable butter.... I leave my plain ol' stick of unsalted butter on the counter, not in the fridge (gasp!!), right next to the tomatoes I refuse to refrigerate. The butter is always soft, always yummy. Honestly, it lasts quite awhile.

--- Then again, I prefer my home at a blissful 68 degrees. You southern types would not approve, even for soft butter. smile

The super markets in my town rarely ever carry margarine any more just a ton a different oil based spreads. I grab the margarine sticks from Land O Lakes when I find them for baking. Real butter sticks for making candy and I now use that Omega 3 Olive Oil spread from Smart Balance or Imported Irish spreadable butter for toast and such.

My grandmothers and all my aunts always left it out. Of course, most of there's was hand churned. But it never went bad.

That is because the Ice box was not invented. laugh

and everything was cooked with butter or lard so it did not need to last to long.

We use only unsalted butter and leave it in a butter bell. Spreadable and fresh.

I leave mine out in the cupbaord with my dishes along with a timy bowl of salt which I use to cook with rather than using a salt shaker.
