A CU, Where Regs Don't Apply
I'll be very interested to see how it comes out. Well, I'd be interested today. In four years, I may or may not give a hoot.

I'd love to see CrossFit discredited in such a major, public way. I'm sure the "by the book" Army method isn't the ideal either, but I firmly believe it's safer and based on more sound principles than CrossFit is.

Reps and speed over form is a dangerous game.

I read that as "CrossFit v. Unfit" at first glance. laugh

My answer was going to be "Unfit" - for sure.

I'm so out of shape. ::goes and hides in shame::

Poor _X_. frown

But your comment got me to wondering...

...does a prior banishment, or even having an 'x' in your name, really prevent one from posting here?

Is that X as in X or X as in Xian?

I have spent a considerable time in my life doing Olympic weightlifting style exercises. I still do some, but I limit those exercises to cleans, dead lifts, the occasional squat session (though now I mostly use machines for ease on the knees).

I also did about two years of crossfit before giving it up. One thing I can say about crossfit is that it is a great workout for those willing to push themselves. But I have a few problems with it. First, sometimes I felt like the WOD exercises were too short and did not sufficiently exhaust my muscles to the point where I felt I was making gains. Most crossfit athletes don't train for crossfit by doing crossfit. Most primarily do Olympic lifting with other additional training.

But my second complaint, and probably my biggest was that crossfit coaching is horrible. If I was a person trying to get fit I would not pay for that product. Why? First, the technique necessary for most Olympic lifts is extremely important. I would venture to say that 95% of the crossfit people I see lifting use improper form. Second, the coaches can get certified in a weekend seminar to train crossfit. Now this is where I stop with it. Example overhead squat: I spent 2 years trying to perfect form with this exercise. From foot position, to ankle and shoulder mobility workouts etc. You cannot learn this in a weekend seminar.

Yesterday I was at the gym watching some crossfit kid max out on dead lifts. He did not perform 1 deadlift.

He would lift the bar, without keeping his back flat (first fail). Then he would lift the weight that was sitting on boxes from 1 foot off the ground (second fail). Lastly he would drop the weight down (third fail).

Kipping: Gosh don't get me started on kipping. Kipping pull ups are not pull ups. Cheating form so that you can get more is not helping. I saw a video of a guy do 100 pullups while kipping. It would not bother me so much if they called them swing ups. But he never once used his arms. Sorry, those don't count.
