I am anxiously awaiting news from my breeder about the litter that's about to be born any day. We are #1 on the wait list for a chocolate male labrador retriever. Fingers crossed there is a chocolate boy in there!

To combat some of my anxiety over this whole thing, I am thinking of potential names. We don't like human names for pets but we can't agree on anything other than that. I like Moose and Bowser (hubby doesn't). I also need something that my kids can pronounce easily and that's appropriate for them (I don't want my 3 year old running around yelling "whiskey!") laugh

Anyone have any suggestions? confused

My grandfather had a dog named "hereheis".

Here. He. Is.

Don't ask, I don't know why.

You said chocolate boy so I'm 'assuming' lab - right.

For training purposes you should chose a name with two distinct syllables, it seems that they are able to pick their name out better. Most basic obedience commands are one syllable so it helps to differentiate their name from the command.

Whatever name you choose, a basic obedience class is a must if you've never done one before. The training is more for the humans than the dog, so the whole family should participate.

Good luck!

Are you Harry Potter fans? I think it would be fun to have a dog (or pony) named Norbert.

Yes, a lab. Sorry!

I like 2-syllable names, I'd heard the same thing about being easier for the dog to learn.

We are big Harry Potter and LOTR fans. Well, I'm a Tolkien nerd so yeah...

I wanted to get a little pug and call him Bilbo Baggins. LMAO

^^ I was going to say the same about the two syllables thing. We were told by trainers that two should be the goal, no more no less. Not one, less it be in counting to two, not three. Two.

It also helps in that you can say their name with different inflections to impart attitude.

Also, stay away from names that rhyme/sound similar to commands that you intend to teach the pup.

(True to form, compliance people are much better at describing what you shouldn't do than what you should!)

I think it'd be hard to pick a name before picking the dog. We waited until we had him picked and were bringing him home. Decided on the drive home.

Oh, I agree. Final decision will be made when we meet him. But we want to have a list of options because otherwise my kids are going to name him Max. They name every. single. farkling. thing. Max. laugh

Sméagol!!

Okay, that probably wouldn't be nice.
Chewie?
Gandalf (Full, formal name, Gandalf the brown. Since Radagast is too many syllables)

I've always liked Biscuit and Peanut for dog names.

I want a Gandalf so badly... I wanted to get a white lab so that we could call him Gandalf. Radagast just doesn't flow as a name...

I thought Gimli but that'd be a better name for a shorter, fat dog. lol

I completely understand about not wanting the kids talking about whiskey. So, how about Bourbon? Scotchy-scotch-scotch?

Or, in the off chance you didn't like^^^, and assuming he has beautiful, long, flowing hair:

Brady! (just explain to your Wolverine-loving hubby that it refers to Tom, and not his soon-to-be former head coach wink )

Hershey is always cute for any "chocolate" pet

Sticking with LOTR .... Bilbo is cute but fair warning a 3-yr old mispronouncing that could be pretty bad

My dog was Remy (after Remy LeBeau from the X-Men)

It's BOB at my house. EVERYONE is Bob.

I always wanted to get a pair of matched bloodhounds and name them Beauregard (accent on the BEAU, of course) and General Lee.

I prefer names that end in the y sound. Our JRT is Sadie. Broke the rule with our heeler named Scout so I end up calling him Scouty.

I think Gimli would be a really cute name. What about something from the countries where you grew up?

Do you like hockey? The people that have the brother to my dog are hockey fans and named him Easton.

What about Ganache? Sounds a little foo-foo, but certainly goes with the theme.
