I find that our role in compliance is deeply rooted in stress. We have a thankless job and are often in positions of contention with those we support. How do you deal with this and maintain balance and tranquility in your life? Those two things are of the utmost importance to me and I do so through Yoga. Yoga isn't just about twisting yourself into a pretzel, it's about how you respond to the stimuli of life, how you treat others and yourself, and how to develop a dialogue with self while silencing the ego.

If you are seeking a new way to manage your stress I highly recommend daily yoga practice. There are many schools from vigorous to more meditative. Try a few, find the one that's for you and let me know if you gain the same benefits I experience.

Compliance may be described as trying to herd cats. Compliance has much in common with cleaning gum off the sole of one’s shoe on a hot day.

Compliance, as dictated by the federal government, is anti-business, anti-consumer, anti-liberty and anti-American.

In his magnum opus, “The Law,” Frédéric Bastiat wonders about the nature of the bureaucrats responsible for onerous regulation: “If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do the legislators and their appointed agents not also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?”

I like ranting myself.

I've always said it takes a special kind of crazy to do what we do.

That aside, I am finding it more difficult lately to cope, but I truly think it has to do with other stresses on top of work...my dad is quite ill, there've been recent issues with my oldest..along with other stresses...i've even noticed my hands are starting to tremble ever so slightly. SO I have increased my gym time...trying to read something other than regs...and generally closing out work altogether from my mind when not physically there. We'll see how it goes...

Realistically: Hobbies and interests, civic and church service, and a wife who is the "better half" of the marriage union help greatly.

Having sampled retirement from a bank lending career for 7 years, I came out of doing all that neato stuff mentioned above to get into compliance. Never dreamed of how much it had changed, just since 2006! Still, don't wish to be guilty of "having put one's hand to the plow and looking back" so will soldier on a few years until I can stand it no longer then will gratefully retire for good.

Insanity. The workout (not compliance in general).

If I am suuuuuuper stressed, I find that reading real life survival stories is helpful. Puts it all into perspective - when you read about someone surviving an airplane crash in WWII behind Nazi lines in Albania, and walking out through the mountains, suddenly Dodd Frank doesn't seem so bad.

This time of year seems to be exceptionally stressful here, but the last two years have taken the cake. One thing I learned very early in my career is you have to look after your own well being because your employer certainly does not care, and I hate to be a downer but over the years they have proven it. So...lots of home time with the cat and family of course! and shopping seem to make it better. And in the warmer months thousands of miles on my bicycle help!

I'm deficient in the exercise aspects of fighting the stress. My wife and I used to walk two miles in thirty minutes five days out of seven. That's fallen by the wayside over the past couple of years. Need to get back into that. I'm sure it helps.

Yep, I'm not glad I am 30.

I need to spend more time thinking about other potential fields! Maybe that would help.

I do my best to flip the switch when I'm walking out the door and leave everything work related at work. It's not been going well lately, I've found myself mentally ranting when out walking the dog at night, but by the time I get home I'm usually better. I'm pretty sure it's akin to an infant crying itself to sleep though, my brain is just so tired of being grouchy that it gives up.

If I didn't work out in the morning, I fear what sort of mental state I'd be in. Unfortunately, I also see it as the high point of the day, which means from 7:30 on, I'm going down a ski slope!

hunting, alcohal, family and video games keep me moving forward. I have generally been able to leave work at the office but it escapes on occasion. The more often work escapes the office the more hunting that needs to be done. Pheasant is to work as garlic is to vampire

If I lived in Colorado or Washington, I know how I'd be handling my stress. whistle

Usually, a good book, a cup of tea, and a pipe loaded with my favorite tobacco does the trick in the evening.
