I think all the gizmos (vivofit, fitbit, Mio Alpha, etc) can range anywhere from very useful to less than useless. It kinda depends on what you are using it for and what your particular motivation is. Some people are heavily and internally motivated others want them as an accountablity deivice. Neither is necessarily wrong, its just important to be honest with yourself about what you expect out of it and yourself.

I got my fitbit not necessarily for weight loss. I needed it to track my steps to earn points with my health insurance. I had to take 10,000 steps a day to earn points. At the end of the year I had enough points that I cashed in I got a gift card that paid for a Dyson vaccuum.

You used your points to get a gift for your husband? How thoughtful!

I got the fitbit one the first part of January. It works well for me. I'm entertained by the cute little badges it sends when you reach goals.

A heart monitor can be very helpful. I have to be careful not to work too hard or it can cause a MS relapse. When I work out, I go HARD so it is nice to have the monitor tell me to slow it down.

I like my fitbit because it a reminder to get up and move while I'm at work.

Tiger's Den!
I have been walking on the treadmill for 2 years next month after a pretty sedentary 3 years (after two back surgeries). I increased my endurance and MPH with each passing month, and lost over 50 lbs, but by last October or so I reached a plateau. Didn't gain any weight back, but did not lose any more. I met with a trainer and he increased my workout to include upper and lower body (with minimal impact to my back) as well as cardio. The workout is a every other day schedule, but I use the off days to do more cardio. I am challenging myself and I figured that having one of these devices will keep me motivated.
