Our bank's name is The Community Bank of XYZ. Our president wants to just put The Community Bank on our advertisements. This is not our legal name. Can we do this?

A legal name is a legal name. I suspect your president suspects by putting the XYZ in the name it limits the perception of the bank's ability to provide with the big banks provide. On the other hand some banks are trying NOT to be compared to big banks but to emphasize their LOCAL knowledge and service. I don't think from what you have provided either way is going to make a BIG diffence.
