Anyone preregistrating for their .bank domain name? We are trying to get an idea if this is something everyone is planning on doing? Is everyone waiting to see how this unfolds?

We're a credit union, so no. smile

In general, as someone who has been on the internet for some time and has run several websites during that journey, I've seen niche TLD's come and go. For the most part I rarely see a point to straying from a traditional .com, .net, or .org... other than parking the domain name to preserve your brand or prevent someone else from registering it for illicit purposes.... Or if your existing .com domain name is a mouthful.

I attended a peer group meeting this week where this was a topic of discussion. The consensus was everyone in the room was going to register their bank name, whether they intended to use the .bank domain or not, for the same reasons MtnHiker indicated above.

I get the preserving of your bank's name, but wasn't sure if anyone could use it for illicit purposes if supposedly only banks can register for it.

I guess I would ask what kind of due diligence the registrar is doing to verify the registrant is an actual bank that exists?

It looks like there is a lot of verification involved to establish that the registrant is a legitimate bank representative.

However, what happens with banks of the same name, i.e. First National Bank? I guess it would be like the .com TLD where it's first come, first served.

I sort of watched the free webinar today from ICBA/EnCirca. They have a pretty extensive verification process. They also have a list on the EnCirca website of general names that won't be permitted to use. I was doing other things while watching so I didn't catch all of what they are saying, but they will be providing a recording on the EnCirca website, and they also have several other webinars scheduled. They answered lots of questions, I just wanted the basics in case the powers that be decide they want to move forward with it here. So far, it isn't looking like it.

So you're saying above, most banks will register the .bank URL just to protect their name and that URL? Aren't these like a grand a year or two? This isn't Go Daddy's $20 fee. Plus you mast have your name trademarked, right?

Per Encirca.com's website:

What is the pricing for registering a .BANK domain name? EnCirca charges $999/year with a 10% discount for ICBA members.

Also, it doesn't appear that there is a requirement to have registered trademark in order to have a .bank.

I could be wrong but I thought the registered trademark was needed for early registration.

According to the fTLD Name Selection Policy:
"Domain name must: (a) correspond to a trademark, trade name or service mark of the business or organization; (b) not be a Reserved Name; and (c) not be likely to deceive or cause material detriment to a significant portion of the banking, insurance and/or financial services communities, its customers or Internet users."

However, under the FAQ, it states:
"Is having a registered trademark a requirement to register a .BANK domain?
No, this is not necessary. Your organization may have common law rights arising from the actual use of a trademark and this is sufficient for registering a domain.
"

Thanks,
Russ

So has anyone looked at any of the other registar's besides EnCirca? Might be hard to get 999/yr approved just to reserve a domain name.

I've researched other vendors, best advice do your due diligence. There are only a few that are US based. When I researched the cost, they were all about 999/yr, with some additional fees.

We just revised our website and now are using it. All our previous domain names are automatically sent to the new one.
