So, I recently moved to the sticks. I love the property but I am having issues finding an ISP. It sounds like my only options are dial-up or satellite. Do any of you have experience with using a satellite ISP? If so, what issues did you have? Reliability in poor weather? Expensive? Any input would be great. I used to have fiber to my front door and that supported my online gaming habit perfectly. I am concerned that I satellite won't be able to keep up with my xbox use.

Satellite has horrible ping times so games are often negatively effected. But it is good for streaming movies or surfing the net. One problem, at least with the companies I have experience with is that they cap your bandwidth and the overage charges are huge. Also its base cost is about 2 to 4 times that of DSL depending on the speed..

I have sees on other forums people have had better luck getting a good data plan on their smart phone then use the hot spot on the phone to surf the net or play games. But again you are looking at data limits and possible overage charges. Just have to see which is more costly in your area.

Yep. We use a local satellite provider.
If so, what issues did you have?
How much time do you have?

Reliability in poor weather? Not great but slightly better than my satellite TV. However it was struck by lightning 3 times last year.
Expensive?
Yes but I don't know what's reasonable anymore

I am concerned that I satellite won't be able to keep up with my xbox use.
It won't.

LOL not to be doom and gloom but satellite isn't great. However, it's a cost of living in paradise aka the sticks.

Mine (satellite) is way better than what I WASN'T getting from AT&T. But there are limits due to weather. Not enough to outweigh it's pro's vs the only other real option I have.

you guys are making me sad .... I spend a lot of time outside, but when it's raining or snowing I like to play online. I guess I will have to actually start interacting with my family.

Well ... at least my situation is a want not a need. I currently have a cable company and a dsl company trying to "find my address". I told them to use bing maps (or google, or a paper one from the gas station) that suggestion apparently wasn't helpful.
