Was in my wife's office visiting with one of her coworkers who had found some sort of almanac from 1916 in some stuff that had been her husband's grandparents.

I opened it to a random page that happened to outline the national debt. Listed the debt per capata. Used 1913 figures: $10.13!

What is it now? Over $50,000 per person? Inflation doesn't explain away that monster. Are we better off for it than we were on the eve of what became the First World War? I submit not. We've been manipulated by our own government. Only thing worse than that might be manipulated by something masquerading as religion.

of course, the Pope travels in great style as well, and while he does not "own" a jet for his use, the one he uses is leased from Allitalia...but a host of other lesser folks in the Church have access to church-owned private jets too.

religion is many things to many people, but it is also a business. there are now franchises of churches that can be bought, and with that comes back office support for mailings, how to raise funds, how to grow the church, etc.
